Howdy,

EDIT: See post 9 for logs

I HAVE done LOTS of searching, but when you dont know the lingo it makes it hard.

I'm running Arch Linux on the IBM T 30

I'm a Linux noob who could use some help please.. It runs really slow,
I think i need to turn on the hardware acceleration for the video card.

I know NOTHING about linux .. could you help me out please

I could do with some hand holding to get it running right, I have
looked into turning things on in the kernel but i cant find out how to
do it. Or what to turn on

vid card : ATI Mobility Radeon 7500

EDIT: See post 9 for logs

Regards

Mark

  1. Please change your thread title to something more helpful

  2. What graphics driver do you have installed

I didn't ask what card you had. I asked what driver you had.

Have you installed the relevant dri package? What feels slow? If you're on an x64 rig, do you have the relevant lib32 packages if you need them?

Please take a moment to read this.

Re: [Closed] No Video Hardware acceleration / Ati vid / Cinnamon /

Relevant dri package, would be the xf86-video-ati ? in a console it's fine, but when i boot into cinnamon it states that it's currently running without "video hardware acceleration" so the desktop is really slow, opens everything slow .. and it's a 32 bit  rig .

sorry i'l Quote everything now on reply, as that seems to be the thing to do ..

I appreciate the help. but you need to keep in mind this is my first linux install, so i know nothing about linux, but i'm trying hard to learn :-)

Re: [Closed] No Video Hardware acceleration / Ati vid / Cinnamon /

The dude, I don't know much about video drivers, but have you read this?  You do have mesa and libvdpau installed, right? They are (indeirect) dependencies of xf86-video-ati, so they should be installed, but it's still worth checking.

On a side note, you'll likely find that these forums are very supportive of people who want to learn, regardless of what their current state of linux knowledge is.  But - while it may see odd/counter-intuitive at first - most people here can really do without all the sugar coating.  Courtesy is always good, and a please and thank you can go a long way - however, it will only end up irritating many readers to have to wade through a bowl full of sugar just to find the information they need to help you, or the question that you are asking.

All the "please help"s are unneeded.  Anyone reading this thread is reading so they can try to help - high information-density posts will help them do that.

As an example - I was initially wondering why you suspected this was a hardware accelleration issue.  A clear and objective description of symptoms is a treasured resource on support forums.  The Cinnammon error message is useful - but could you get the word-for-word version of it please?  Also check your xorg logs.  How to do so will depend on how you start X, do you use a login manager (like gdm) or do you use xinit/startx manually?

mesa ,  libvdpau , xf86-video-ati are all installed.

The Cinnamon error message:

Cinnamon is currently running without video hardware acceleration and as a result, you may observe much higher than normal CPU usage.
There could be a problem with your drivers or some other issue. For the best experience, it is recommended that you only use this mode for troubleshooting purposes.

For loggin in  ATM, boot into shell and log in with lxdm
"/usr/sbin/lxdm" then user and pass to bring up Cinnamon

Re: [Closed] No Video Hardware acceleration / Ati vid / Cinnamon /

The Xorg0.log doesn't appear to show problems (although it does feel a bit weird to see only xrandr 1.2 supported) .

please post the output of glxinfo | grep render

I don't know what

Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy"

does, but please try commenting it out to see if it makes a difference.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: [Closed] No Video Hardware acceleration / Ati vid / Cinnamon /

Lone_Wolf, I wondered about that too - it seems to be recommended in the troubleshooting section of the ati wiki page.

The dude, you've also tried without any xorg conf files, right? Generally no such file would be needed, but if you've tried with and without it and get similar results it shouldn't be part of the issue.

Glxinfo:

[root@fuck ~]# glxinfo |grep render
direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.2, 128 bits)
    GL_NV_conditional_render, GL_NV_fog_distance, GL_NV_light_max_exponent,
[root@fuck ~]# glxgears
162 frames in 5.0 seconds = 32.323 FPS
282 frames in 5.0 seconds = 56.350 FPS

Commenting out

Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy"

Makes no diff..

I have not tried that, so just rename xorg.conf to xorg.conf-backup and reboot ?

When i do a " locate xorg | grep conf " it comes up with xorg.conf.d , no xorg.conf ... or do you mean try without the 20-radeon.conf under "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d" ?

AFK Till morning now .. Cheers

Re: [Closed] No Video Hardware acceleration / Ati vid / Cinnamon /

Yes, sorry, I meant the 20-radeon.conf.

Generally, X should run fine with nothing in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/.  Any files there are often collectively referred to as xorg conf files.  That 20-radeon.conf is recommended in the wiki as a troubleshooting step, but I'd recommend always starting as simple as possible, and only add such configurations if they are found to be needed.

Re: [Closed] No Video Hardware acceleration / Ati vid / Cinnamon /

The glxinfo matches what should be there when HW acceleration is active.

These lines suggest your bios may be a bit old/outdated, best check if there are newer versions available.

Your videocard is connected through AGP 4x (max your laptop can handle) , but i don't see anything wrong with it.
There is however 1 thing that's worth checking :

[ 8.061245] [drm] radeon: power management initialized

As root, run cat /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/radeon_pm_info to find out at which speed the gpu is running.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

I'll see if i get a bios update for it..

Output for gpu speed:

Re: [Closed] No Video Hardware acceleration / Ati vid / Cinnamon /

Ok, from linux / X /powerrnanagement point of view everything is setup correctly.

That suggests the problem is between cinnamon and the driver.

it might be that cinnamon needs opengl extensions that are not supported by your driver/card combo, glxinfo output would help to determine that.
(Only the part before GLX Visuals matters for this).

You should also check cinnamon settings and see if disabling some graphic effects solves the problem.
Do you have cinnamon extensions installed ? if so, try removing those.

It seems worth a shot to install another WM/DE to see if that is also slow.

Re: [Closed] No Video Hardware acceleration / Ati vid / Cinnamon /

Thanks for your help... Marking this as closed .. I have tried different WM/DE and they are all slow, So i'm gunna put this down to an incompatibility with hardware / drivers. Dont want waste any more of peoples time on it..

I have an install running nice now on another laptop..

Cheers ...
