New install lightdm does not start

I've installed arch and not much past that point.  After troubles with lightdm I installed gnome and used 'systemctl enable gdm' and gdm worked after my reboot.  Anyway, more info on my lightdm problem.

Steps to install

pacman -S lightdm
pacman -S lightdm-gtk3-greeter

systemctl enable lightdm

reboot

Upon reboot screen flashes a couple of times and then stops.

I had installed xfce4 prior to this and made sure the xfce4.desktop file existed.  I've looked up other posts and I have not had look implementing their solutions.  Any ideas?

Not an Installation issue, moving to Apps & DEs...

What is in the greeter log?

Re: New install lightdm does not start

I've fixed it going to /var/lib then "chown lightdm.lightdm lightdm/"

Hope it helps.

Re: New install lightdm does not start

Thanks tschertel, that worked!  Just one more question.  Why is it lightdm.lightdm instead of just lightdm?

Re: New install lightdm does not start

The second unit (after the period) assigns the group.

You could also leave it out (keeping the period) to assign the user group defined in passwd as well, for the same effect.

Re: New install lightdm does not start

This install was on Virtual Box.  Today I installed on an HP netbook and did not have the same problem.  Maybe because it was just fixed as Padfoot reported?

My Lightdm stopped working a few days ago after an update.

Re: New install lightdm does not start

Ran into the same problem with "Failed to open CK session: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.freedesktop.ConsoleKit was not provided by any .service files". The solution was simply to merge all new *.pacnew's in /etc/lightdm smile

Re: New install lightdm does not start

There were permission changes in some recent updates, and with some installs, older cached files were causing permission problems preventing the greeter starting. Solution as follows:

1. Boot into a console (fallback or single user mode - as long as lightdm is not started you are good)
2. Back up your /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf and /etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf
3. Uninstall lightdm and lightdm-gtk{2/3}-greeter
4. Ensure both the lightdm user and group no longer exist
5. Delete /var/lib/lightdm, /var/cache/lightdm and /run/lightdm
6. Re-install lightdm and lightdm-gtk{2/3}-greeter
7. Restore your configs

Cheers.

Re: New install lightdm does not start

I did a clean install of Arch yesterday and am also getting the ConsoleKit errors. I then executed the steps Padfoot laid out in the previous post but the issue persists.

Thank you!
This solution solved my problem. smile I should have checked the config files more carefully.
