[SOLVED] Audacity - no "default" option for capturing audio anymore

Facts:

  • * I have audio.
    * System audio works fine under firefox, vlc, etc, as well as the "test" menus for kmix
    * kmix master channel select shows a device , "built-in analog stereo"
    * Audacity only shows this list:

http://en.zimagez.com/zimage/screenshot … 5147pm.php

* none of the selections contains "default" which I have always used.

lspci output:
http://pastebin.com/9xq7Cuxk

system:

Kernel: 3.11.1-1-ARCH
Audacity: audacity 2.0.4-1
Desktop: KDE, but also tested on Gnome 3

UPDATE:

The AUR package for adacity-svn works fine.  When run from the terminal, this is what I get with the standard audacity:

ALSA lib pcm.c:2239:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM cards.pcm.rear
ALSA lib pcm.c:2239:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM cards.pcm.center_lfe
ALSA lib pcm.c:2239:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM cards.pcm.side
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1022:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Expression 'stream->playback.pcm' failed in 'src/hostapi/alsa/pa_linux_alsa.c', line: 4582
Expression 'stream->playback.pcm' failed in 'src/hostapi/alsa/pa_linux_alsa.c', line: 4582

Expression 'stream->playback.pcm' failed in 'src/hostapi/alsa/pa_linux_alsa.c', line: 4582

The working audacity-svn terminal output looks like this:

ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1022:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
ALSA lib pcm.c:2239:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM cards.pcm.rear
ALSA lib pcm.c:2239:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM cards.pcm.center_lfe
ALSA lib pcm.c:2239:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM cards.pcm.side
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:961:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) The dmix plugin supports only playback stream
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1022:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave

Let me know what else I need to provide.

what actually are you trying to capture? from a microphone?
have you tried if any of the input devices work?

Re: [SOLVED] Audacity - no "default" option for capturing audio anymore

I always captured from the default option, which is a capture from the Intel on board analog source.  The only options I get on the official package are multiple hardwares with line in, line out, mic, rear, front.  No 'default' or Intel XXXXX analog audio.  The SVN works ok, but sometimes I get lag in capturing.  In KMIX, sometimes the capture section is blank.  Playing sound on anything works just fine.  I tried changing settings in KDE's audio settings menu, to no avail or pavucontrol for pulse audio.

Re: [SOLVED] Audacity - no "default" option for capturing audio anymore

the 'default' should be just an alias for one of your input sources, not an actual device. don't know why the that option would have disappeared from the list if it's been there before on the same system, unless something has changed in your alsa configuration.

if you're recording from analog line input, you should be able to record it from one of the line-in sources. most likely hw:0,0

Have you tried going through each option offering mic input? Enough mic volume is turned up.  You can see if mic is picking up using the monitor option in Audacity.

Regarding lag - using Jack can help, but can be tricky to setup.

Re: [SOLVED] Audacity - no "default" option for capturing audio anymore

[SOLVED]  It is now "Line 2"  ... which used to be Intel HXXXXX , /or default.   Idk why it has changed to this odd format now, but I went through each and got it.  Thanks Darkcity
