Finish 7.1 - now!

Will you please finish 7.1 instead of adding feature to feature .... It is nearly impossible to install archlinux right now. Freeze it, men, and fix it!!!!  :?

Re: Finish 7.1 - now!

Impossible to install? Do an FTP install man!

(I'm guessing the freeze will come at the end of December, after Xorg 7 goes final.)

Re: Finish 7.1 - now!

I can't do an ftp install, all i get is package errors - think package description / names whatever has changed. I can install cdrom based only, and then have an out dated system. Not only the packages, but the whole thing itself is outdated, with devfs, hotplug, and so on. I can migrate it, of course, people who are new to arch propably won't. I wonder how long it will take untill being fixed. It should be easy to change the install scripts when basic systems change, so everyone would be able to have a proper install, let's say a week after major changes.

Re: Finish 7.1 - now!

He's right. The whole idea of 0.7.1 is to get a working flipping install out there, while we wait for 0.8. Its been a *#$#$ year since the last release for god's sake! Over a month ago I tried to install 0.7 and it gave me all kinds of grief. I mean, why have a 0.7.1 release at all if its going to be another year before its posted??

In the meantime, Moo, use the beta CD, it worked alright for me...

Re: Finish 7.1 - now!

Can't agree more.

I managed to talk some of my friends into trying out Arch. They had terrible issues while installing from ftp or upgrading through the net later on.

Where is the long-awaited 0.7.1??

BTW. where can I get the beta ISO?

Please.

If for no other reason than devfs to udev translation during an install is a fairly major show-stopper PITA for many people.  I'm all for having a "difficult" installer, but not one that requires dabbling in the occult to be able to get it done w/o reading a multi-page how-to several times.

Re: Finish 7.1 - now!

While it would be niceto have an updated iso, i don't understand the problems people claim to have with ftp-installs.

yesterday i set up a linux vm, started with the 0.7 base iso and performed an ftp-install with only base packages selected.
apart from editing grub menu.lst and fstab to use /dev/hdxy you don't have to edit anything else, unless you want to.

The problem with corrupt packages seems to lie with bad internet connections and/or servers.

about ftp-servers :
http://archlinux.antesis.org
uses http and gave me corrupted packages several times. the http protocol doesn't use handshaking like ftp and is just not very reliable for binary filetransport.

ftp://ftp.heanet.ie
never failed me, good choice if you are in europe

ftp://ftp.archlinux.org
also never failed

Offcourse it helps if you understand how partitions work.

Maybe i or someone should write a how-to for an ftp install from 0.7 with only the basic steps that are REQUIRED to get a working base system ?

Re: Finish 7.1 - now!

The 0.7.1beta cd is usually in the same ftp as the 0.7 , Just isn't linked at an obvious place.
Here's a link though: ftp://ftp.ntua.gr/pub/linux/archlinux/0.7.1/iso/i686

Wasn't 0.7.1 supposed to come out in October? All I see is controversial changes to init scripts. I agree with the motion to freeze.

Re: Finish 7.1 - now!

If i understood correctly, the devs want to include initrd in 0.7.1, and problems with this are delaying making 0.7.1 a stable release.

Cool, nice to see see we are waiting for things in a maintenance release that we never REALLY needed anyway!

Re: Finish 7.1 - now!

Yes. Weak reasons for holding it back. I don't want a "stable release" - I just want a working installation, and not a cribbled routine that leads me to the borders of nowhere's land, to start the migration march through 267 system changes. Here am I sitting at my tin can. Flat screen light is blue, and there's nothing I can do ...

Yea, you friggin lazy bastards.  What the hell do you do all day anyway?  I don't want a year-old distro.  I want new, and NOW!  Gimme gimme gimme!  You all freakin OWE me!

Happy Monday everyone.  I love waking up to these.  More than anything else, it makes we want to stop my work that actually makes me money and start pushing out the next version of this distro so you can all move on the next point-of-complaint for Arch.

I'm glad we're all in such lovely moods today.  If you need anything else today, you can kindly email devnull@archlinux.org

Seriously, tone down your demands everyone.  I guarantee that this isn't the way to get me (or others) to make further sacrifices so you can have a 0.7.1 ISO instead of a 0.7.1-pre1 ISO.  Buck up.

You wanna know what I'm waiting for?  Docs.  For those of you that actually stopped posting demands on the forum and downloaded the pre1 iso, you'll notice that there are no docs on it.  The thing installs fine for me every time, so I can't figure out why it doesn't assuage the louder naysayers out there.  If I rebuilt the ISO without "pre1" in the filename, would you be more inclined to use it?

Now you guys seem to have more time than me to sit around and post on the forums about how slow we all are.  Why not put that energy into something more than noise and update the 0.7 docs for 0.7.1?  I will graciously accept doc changes from anyone that has control over the written word.

Can't write docs?  Well, we need a new server too.  You'll find a Donation link on the main page.

We're all in this together.  Perhaps you could stop yelling at us and help out.

Re: Finish 7.1 - now!

The classic tale "A projects eats its fathers balls".
Well, if help is needed, I'ld suppose it would be necessary to invite others or offer a structure to push input to.
My input was: don't try to make 7.1 the big step, as we need a working installation. If 7.1pre is enough, finish it, and you'll have the time to prepare the big step named 8.0. If docs are needed - well, which? I ruined several arch installations, and gave up with hwdetect/initrd/udev/hotplug/pcmcia_cs. How should I write a doc for it then. But is it really clever to add feature to feature and then complain there was no time to add docs? I'm in doubt.

Re: Finish 7.1 - now!

I think it's time to go distro hopping again. In fact, I've been using Windows for the past few days while I search for a new distro. I once said that I'll always crawl back to Arch, but I severely doubt it.

Why? One word. Devs. The only thing I was ever upset about it that when Judd said it was going to come out and it didn't. I understand how free projects work and that's all fine and everything, but this particular instance is not just time and the fact that it's free, the devs do not have their priorities straight. I consider 0.7 a broken install. If you have to hack your system just to work with the official installer there is something wrong. Don't tell me just to use 0.7.1pre either. Release it, please. But really, it's no skin off my back, I am divorced from Arch. I will not give in to it either. If I want pacman I'll just use Rubix.
