[Solved] X doesnt start with GPU (Intel 4000HD)

Hi everyone!
I'm new to the bbs, so this is my first post, but i'm looking forward to be an active member of this community.
I've been using arch for the last 3 years and lovin' it big_smile

Unfortunately the motherboard from my old laptop got ruined so I had to buy a new one: Samsung NP350V5C which came with windows 8.
After digging the wiki I finally could get past the damn UEFI thing and install Arch.

After trying for 1 week to install the dedicated graphics drivers I gave up and tried to install the GPU drivers. An intel 4000HD.

So I followed Intel Graphics Wiki, installed xf86-video-intel, added the line MODULES="i915" to the /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and finally regenerated initramfs by typing: mkinitcpio -p linux.

I'm not sure if I missed any step or if I should do something else.

Here's the log when I do startx

Either options terminate X "successfully" although none of them starts X correctly.

Do you have any idea on how to resolve this issue?

Thanks you all in advance.

PS: I dont know if this is in the correct area. Move it if necessary. :s

Re: [Solved] X doesnt start with GPU (Intel 4000HD)

Welcome to Arch Linux forums :-)

Update your system and try again.
What dedicated driver did you try to install, what other hardware apart from that Intel one do you have there.
Do you have any ~/.xinitrc? If so, post it.

Re: [Solved] X doesnt start with GPU (Intel 4000HD)

System updated and problem still remains. hmm

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Thames XT [Radeon HD 7670M]

While configuring the whole system, I installed too cinnamon meaning that I added exec gnome-session-cinnamon to .xinitrc.
I tried starting X with AND without .xinitrc and it makes no difference. It replies "Server terminated succesfully" without even starting. sad

Re: [Solved] X doesnt start with GPU (Intel 4000HD)

This looks more like a session problem, not a hardware one.

try installing some display manager such as LXDM or GDM, start it via systemd and log in through it.

-m.

What happened to Arch's KISS? systemd sure is stupid but I must have missed the simple part ...

... and who is general Failure and why is he reading my harddisk?

Re: [Solved] X doesnt start with GPU (Intel 4000HD)

First of all thank you for your help, both karol and mr.MikyMaus.

mr.MikyMaus, what if I dont want a display manager? :s
My configuration on my old laptop was simply lxde and openbox. Each time I logged in I had to do "startx".
If startx doesn't run for itself, its weird running with a DM.

But anyway I will try your solution and post feedback soon.
Thanks smile

Re: [Solved] X doesnt start with GPU (Intel 4000HD)

Since the whole case was weird-looking and I had already changed many configurations to match AMD / ati open-source / intel drivers, I thought my Arch could use a fresh install. Because i'm not sure anymore what files I changed.

Anyway, after a fresh install, X works like expected.

Thank you all. big_smile

What does it have to do with the issue OP had?
The link you posted is about automatically starting X. unksafi wanted to just make X work :-)

Ah, now I get it :-)
Sorry, arcon.

Re: [Solved] X doesnt start with GPU (Intel 4000HD)

Get rid of the Xorg.conf file; it's almost always unnecessary these days.  The lower half of your "startx" output is complaining that no input driver can be found for your system; install xf86-input-synaptics, and see if that helps.

I was not complaining that I had to do it, I was just saying that I did.
But thank you anyway smile

I already had that on my old install...
But nevermind, my new install is running just fine and I'm still trying to figure which DE/WM to choose. I'm not sure if I should go with tiling windows (doesn't seem really "workable") or the regular DE (cinnamon/mate/lxde).
