write command and mesg

hi i am trying to use the write and talk command to send messages to other ppl logged in. only thing is mesg returns "n" when i try to set it to "y" i get this:

[vladuz@nanu ~]$ mesg y
mesg: error: tty device is not owned by group `tty'
[vladuz@nanu ~]$ 

anybody know how i can fix this?

have you tried redirecting it to the right device?

mesg "y < vc/1"

or /dev/pts for an x terminal?
