[SOLVED] Booting to a black screen, then white screen

Hi,

I have an old laptop that is completely up-to-date, with one exception: it runs kernel 3.3.8. I now want to update the kernel. After updating, however, booting fails. Systemd starts seemingly ok, but after about Started Setup Virtual Console (this varies also) I get a black screen and then a white screen. Nothing happens then. After pressing the power button the screen goes black again, the system initiates shutting down, and actually shuts down properly. This happens to the latest kernels 3.10 and 3.11, but also to the kernel of the latest Arch installation iso disc.

Here are the full logs of the failed boot. NB: I use a kernel from AUR, which does not conflict with kernel 3.3.8. What happens, however, is the same as the official kernel.

I tried to solve it by disabling kernel modesetting, but no success. I also tried to disable starting X at boot, but the problem persists. acpi=off also does not solve the problem.
Strangely, my wireless network (sorryvoordehobo) doesn't start either, and the wireless light stays off. When booting with kernel 3.3.8 the light goes on and the connection is made. What puzzles me, is how this is related to the black and white screen at boot. In comparison: here are the logs of a successful boot of kernel 3.3.8:

Does anybody have an idea what I am doing wrong here?

Thanks in advance,
Rogier

Solved by blacklisting viafb!
What remains is the wireless issue, but I will troubleshoot further.
