'grammin tunes

Yeah, who knows where this thread actually belongs.... OT might fit too, but I figure this will draw the best crowd.

Many of us people who program for 'fun' (yes, I think it's fun) like to do the "zone out" thing where you pop in some headphones and just code.

So what do you listen to?

I've found Bad Religion and Nine Inch Nails to be good for this, but it's getting stagnating. I need some ideas from you people.

I'm pretty eclectic - I have no genre called Programming. However, at the moment I find myself listening to The Kaiser Chiefs, The Killers, Moldy Peaches, Gorillaz, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and plenty of blues, like Robert Johnson, Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters.

This is definitely OT.

I used to listen to chillout or trance when coding. It gets in my soul and links me to the system, ya know? But ever since I discovered Sarah Brightman, I rarely listen to anything else whether I am coding, cooking, cleaning, or crying.

I'm a techno junkie anyways, but I'm very into Euro and Vocal trance when I code.

Artists: Sasha & Digweed, Tiesto, Gorillaz, Aphex Twin, Da Rude, Daft Punk, Enigma (good stuff!), Fatboy Slim, Paul van Dyke. Also love Death From Above, NIN, Tool, A Perfect Circle, Rammstien, Soulwax, Autolux, Mars Volta, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Enya, Bjork. Lots more, but I'll stop.

I have a select list of music from anime shows I listen to, as well as Barenaked Ladies, Garth Brooks, Arrogant Worms, and miscellenious rock/jazz/blues that catches my ear.

At the moment I'm mostly listening to My Bloody Valentine, Sigur Ros, Starsky, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Saints, Engineers, Aampirellas, The Liars, Gillian Welch, The Carter Family, Bill Monroe, The Red Sun Band, Big Black, The Chills plus the odd record picked at random from the vinyl collection.

I listen to a lot of trip hop, opera and classical, and random rock. My favorites have to be Massive Attack, Air, and Radiohead depending on the mood.

heh, i'm all into minimalistic electronica. among my favorites are Lusine ICL, Murcof, Sun Project, PodP, Cinematic Orchestra and others who do experimental stuff, for most it's a pain and maybe that's why i like them even more.
of course the late Solaris OST totally get's me into the right calm mood to do serious work over hours. Cliff Martinez all the way.
when i'm awake in the morning after i got to work - for a change - i can also be into Bad Religion and that kind of stuff. to be honest though, they bore me to death after a while.

Oh, and if you like Air, Sigur Ros is amazing as well. Yann Tireson on the Amelie sound track is fun stuff too. We should make an #archmusic channel on freenode :-D

It's extremely technical progressive instrumental experimental metal, heh. They cover music from Bambi and stuff, quite fun. The brothers in that band also play in Watchtower, which is similar to Spiral Architect. It's kind of a niche :]

Ewww? What about Kraftwerk? (Gotta love the oldies.) I'm not big on Portishead... I hate electronic music that isn't musical (happy hardcore, some D&B, etc. Includes stuff like Orbital and some of Aphex Twin's stuff [parts of Drukqs for example are just noise to me].)

Btw, you should check out Slagsmaalsklubben. Swedish nintendo-like music. It's perhaps one of the most fun groups I've seen perform live.
