[solved] screen garbage after opening terminal. Remains after closing

I've only started getting this problem a week or two after installing.  Haven't updated the system until after it started happening.

I've tried disabling compositing, re-installing the nvidia proprietary  drivers, switching to the open source ones , and tried using lxde instead. Yet the problem still remains...

Is this only occurring with a specific terminal, any terminal or other applications also? Sounds and looks somewhat like a hardware failure.

It occurs when I open up any terminal application on the desktop (konsole, built-in terminal with Dolphin).  I'm not sure it is a hardware failure, as I've booted into Windows and played CS:GO for unhealthy amounts of time.

o-kay... I just removed startx from my .bashrc file and the garbage has disappeared.  I have more to learn, it seams...

startx should go in your .bash_profile, not .bashrc. Did you use a conditional statement as recommended in the wiki?
