[SOLVED] Gnome-shell crashing on hot corner

I am using gnome3 desktop. I have observed that when I move mouse to the top left corner of the screen, sometimes arch freezes and I must reboot. Other times, it crashes and a blank screen with a sad smiley appears saying: Oh no! Something has gone wrong. All extensions have been disabled as a precaution. Then I press on the button that appears 'Log out'. So I have to log out and log in again.....

What's happening?

I have re-installed gnome, gnome-shell, gdm, ....

But nothing works....

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome-shell crashing on hot corner

Similar problem here - gnome-shell started crashing all the time after a recent update, probably this one:

[2013-10-12 00:27] [PACMAN] starting full system upgrade
[2013-10-12 00:29] [PACMAN] upgraded celt0.5.1 (0.5.1.3-1 -> 0.5.1.3-2)
[2013-10-12 00:29] [PACMAN] upgraded driconf (0.9.1-8 -> 0.9.1-10)
[2013-10-12 00:29] [PACMAN] upgraded glibmm (2.37.93-1 -> 2.38.0-1)
[2013-10-12 00:29] [PACMAN] upgraded gtk-update-icon-cache (2.24.21-2 -> 2.24.22-1)
[2013-10-12 00:29] [PACMAN] upgraded wayland (1.2.1-1 -> 1.3.0-1)
[2013-10-12 00:29] [PACMAN] upgraded gtk3 (3.10.0-2 -> 3.10.1-1)
[2013-10-12 00:29] [PACMAN] upgraded gnome-session (3.10.0-2 -> 3.10.1-1)
[2013-10-12 00:29] [PACMAN] upgraded gtk2 (2.24.21-2 -> 2.24.22-1)
[2013-10-12 00:29] [PACMAN] upgraded gtkmm3 (3.9.16-1 -> 3.10.0-1)
[2013-10-12 00:29] [PACMAN] upgraded kbd (2.0.0-1 -> 2.0.0-2)
[2013-10-12 00:29] [PACMAN] upgraded v4l-utils (0.9.5-2 -> 1.0.0-1)
[2013-10-12 00:29] [PACMAN] upgraded lib32-v4l-utils (0.9.5-1 -> 1.0.0-1)
[2013-10-12 00:29] [PACMAN] upgraded libcacard (1.6.0-6 -> 1.6.1-1)
[2013-10-12 00:29] [PACMAN] upgraded mercurial (2.7.1-1 -> 2.7.2-1)
[2013-10-12 00:29] [PACMAN] upgraded networkmanager (0.9.8.6-1 -> 0.9.8.8-1)
[2013-10-12 00:29] [PACMAN] upgraded opencv (2.4.6.1-2 -> 2.4.6.1-3)
[2013-10-12 00:29] [PACMAN] upgraded python2-matplotlib (1.3.0-1 -> 1.3.1-1)

dmesg shows segfaults in libglib and general protection faults in libgobject, but glib2 hasn't been updated in a while. Downgrading gtk3 to 3.10.0-2 *seems* to fix the problem though.

I have solved it. It seems that in my case the problem was 4pane application. After uninstalling it, it works like a charm!

I'm having similiar issues. It could help if you explained how you figured out that the 4pane application was the cause of the problem. I don't have that installed.

Downgrading gtk3 to 3.10.0-2 as andreihaiducul says seems to have fixed it for me too.

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome-shell crashing on hot corner

I am not using Gnome 3 in Arch, but I am in Fedora.  Had a problem where launching pretty much any GUI app as root in terminal would cause a crash when the hot corner was clicked on.  The following bug comment #13 solved that issue for me when using beesu.

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=972600#c13

Probably need a bug report filed with Archlinux.

I detected that the cause was 4pane because when I launched it, first time it was displaying (once 4pane window  opened), it began to blink and then exited immediately, so I guessed that something wrong was happening with 4pane. Maybe some 4pane package were conflicting with gnome-shell, gnome-desktop.... i am not sure about it. But I uninstalled it and all began to work like a charm.

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome-shell crashing on hot corner

Similar experience, on ia32 only, 64bit boxen unaffected. However, downgrading of gtk3, gnome-session and networkmanager make no difference. Unfortunately, the 32 bit box is the wife's netbook, and I'm Mr Unpopular atm. Not solved here.

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome-shell crashing on hot corner

I had this problem yesterday, and I could resolve it, but only after some fiddling:

I noticed the shell only crashed when opening the overview, so I thought it might be due to something wrong with my .desktop files (weird hypothesis, but I had some shell crashes before when installing applications, so I might as well check it out...). I followed the debugging instructions in https://wiki.gnome.org/GnomeShell/Debugging but the crash didn't occur because no applications were loaded (!), which confirmed my suspicion.

I proceeded to clean up `~/.local/share/applications/`. I have alacarte installed, so I ran it to check out what else could be removed. alacarte also segfaulted with an address boundary error, but  I could trace the error to the point where alacarte updates its view when changes occur to app categories. After I got rid of everything else I could, I found deleting all empty categories (in my case, I had one called "Others") fixed the problem.

So toni: maybe 4pane's .desktop files messes up the application categories, which in turn causes the shell to crash?

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome-shell crashing on hot corner

It sounds like this: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=171206
Reported here: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/37302
And here: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=709967

There's a patch if you want to confirm it. If you do, please post your results in the reports.

Edit: if you want to confirm if you're experiencing the bug reported in the links above without applying the patch, do the following as root:

sudo -s
echo "#!/bin/bash" > /etc/profile.d/gslice-debug-blocks.sh
echo "export G_SLICE=debug-blocks" >> /etc/profile.d/gslice-debug-blocks.sh
chmod +x /etc/profile.d/gslice-debug-blocks.sh

Reboot. Gnome Shell should now crash when showing the activities view. Don't forget to remove the file added in /etc/profile.d and reboot to go back to normal behavior.

I have the same Issue, gnome-shell crashes when touching the hot corner. Downgrading gtk3 to 3.10.0.2 fixes the problem.

I checked if I was affected by the bug Pse mentioned, and I found I wasn't (or at least, didn't run into it).

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome-shell crashing on hot corner

Hello. Same problem:
kernel: gnome-shell general protection in libglib-2.0.so.0.3800.0
when using the menu (some Gnome session will not even give chance to open)

The problem appeared after upgrading the following packages:

[2013-10-14 10:27] [PACMAN] upgraded xorg-xauth (1.0.7-1 -> 1.0.8-1)

Reverting to gtk3 3.10.0-2 solved the problem.

Thanks

As I have seen in the links you have posted, it seems that updating to gtk3-3.10.1-1 makes gnome shell to crash when showing the activities view. But in my case I have arch x86_64 and gtk3-3.10.1-1 installed and I have not appreciated this bug with this version of gtk. I have not needed to revert to gtk3-3.10.0-2.

Below what I have installed in my system:

extra/gtk3 3.10.1-1
extra/gtkmm3 3.10.0-1

I experience a similar problem (gnome-shell crashes when in overview mode). It looks like downgrading the gtk3 package to version gtk3-3.10.0-2 solves it for me too. Thanks for the tip!

The crash in the links I posted is related to internal GSlice allocator state corruption related to a double-free bug in Gtk code. These bugs usually don't present themselves in consistent ways (i.e. some may experience the crash, some may not). If you are not affected, you don't need to do anything.

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome-shell crashing on hot corner

fmoralesc suggestion about corrupted .desktop files worked for me. I remember I had weird behavior in alacarte a few months ago. Deleted some weird looking .desktop files in .local/share/applications and it fixed it.
