"Failed to talk to init daemon" after waking from suspend

I got this shitty poulsbo driver and I've been having this issue for some time now.

When I close the laptop lid and complete the suspend/wake-up process more than once, it no longer suspends and cannot poweroff/reboot the machine at all. When I try to to do that I get:

Failed to open /dev/initctl: No such device or address
Failed to talk to init daemon.

Running dmesg after the second failed suspend I get this. Somewhere between you'll notice there is a systemd error:

Re: "Failed to talk to init daemon" after waking from suspend

I believe it's related to this kernel bug:

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=61781

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=170008

If you need to reboot, try "reboot -f".
