Laptop going to sleep randomly

Since today, I have noticed my laptop is suspending after about 10 minutes (not exact). Yesterday it was fine. I don't remember modifying anything and I haven't updated any packages today or yesterday. What could the issue be?

By the way, I'm not using the battery.

Re: Laptop going to sleep randomly

Do you run acpid / laptop-mode / ? but most probably is related to pm-suspend.
Do you have any suspend line on .xinitrc?

" Suspend on idle/inactivity

One method relies on xautolock program. Add following: xautolock -time 30 -locker "sudo pm-suspend" & to ~/.xinitrc. This implies that pm-suspend is called after 30 minutes of inactivity. "
I would check especially what /var/log/pm-suspend.log has to say.
Check also https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/pm-utils you may find the solution there.

Re: Laptop going to sleep randomly

I am not trying to make wise cracks about the current relationship between our countries.  I ask this in all seriousness, is your line power power stable?  I ask because you say you are not using batteries.  Are your batteries installed, and are the functional?

I am envisioning a scenario where the system does not like the line power, tries to change over to battery, finds the battery state too low, and enters sleep state.

Hi! I don't use any of those (acpid, laptop-mode, .xinitrc -don't have one-, or pm-utils). I use KDE and the power options that come with it. I have used the same setup for years and never had any issues. This is the first time it happens and I don't know what triggered it (I haven't updated since two days ago)...

Hi! Haha, I meant I use the laptop plugged in without the battery (I rarely use the laptop as a laptop!). It never gave me any issues, this is since today.

By the way, something I noticed is that it doesn't sleep when I'm not using the laptop or if I'm only using the mouse and rarely the keyboard. If I use it, it suspends every three-four seconds or so. This post was a pain to write because of that. Is the keyboard triggering it? Is that even possible?

Thank you both!

Re: Laptop going to sleep randomly

Have you got an external keyboard you could try with?

You might want to uninstall pm-utils if you haven't already just to rule it out. (KDE is just free of it finally!)

Re: Laptop going to sleep randomly

I really don't understand what the issue is or was. Last night I suspended my laptop to go to sleep myself, and since I started using it again, it hasn't happened again. It is really weird, because yesterday I suspended-awoke the laptop several times and even rebooted to see if it changed and it still occurred, and I haven't done anything different today, but oh, well.

And cfr, I did remove pm-utils before I opened this thread, thinking it might have been related, but it wasn't. This is really the first time this has happened.

Anyway, I'll keep testing and mark it as solved if it is. And thanks all for your answers. smile
