This will probably be hopelessly vague, but my up-to-date KDE arch install had perfectly working sound--until I muted it today by using the mute key on my keyboard. I haven't been able to hear anything since...
It's a pulseaudio-alsa setup. I've checked every mixer I can find to make sure nothing is muted.
No sound from anything--browsers, VLC, speaker-test...
I'm baffled...
What can I check to see what the problem might be..?

Hey, be nice...I'm new at this!
Offline
Can you unmute it from either alsamixer or possibly with something like pavucontrol or even pacmd?
Offline
Both alsamixer & pavucontrol showed nothing muted. Don't know what pacmd is (yet).

Okay. I got it unmuted. :-D
It's been awhile since I've used alsamixer (blush)...I had forgotten that "MM" at the bottom of an alsamixer slider meant "Muted".
The remaining issue becomes: why my keyboard Mute button will mute--but not UNmute... I just tried it again several times. First press mutes, but second press displays the OSD volume slider as having been restored--but the sound is still actually muted.

Wonder if this is related: My "NUM LOCK" key doesn't work, either. It happens to be right below the Mute Button (co-incidence, I'm sure!) Is there something in my KDE settings that needs to be tweaked, I wonder...?
