ATI HD 6950 hangs at startup when radeon.dpm=1 is enabled

I have been trying to get Radeon DPM (dynamic power management) to work since kernel 3.11 was released. Every time I add "radeon.dpm=1" to the kernel parameters, the system hangs immediately after startup (by which I mean immediately after I select an option from GRUB). No log of any form is produced from that particular power-up. From the systemd journal, it appears as if I didn't power up the computer at all. The system does not respond to SysRq, and there is no hard-disk activity at all after the system hangs. I tried with the stock Arch kernel and the mainline kernel up to 3.12R6 with no success.

I am using a ATI HD 6950 card on a ASUS P8H67-M LE motherboard, and my CPU is Intel i5-2400. Can any give me some clue how to start debugging this problem? I have seen on phronix that a HD 6950 card does support DPM with kernel 3.11. Any help is sincerely appreciated.

I have this exact same problem. I found a bug report which I follow, here: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=69723
If you have anything that could help solve this, please add it to the report as I am too very anxious to get this fixed.

Re: ATI HD 6950 hangs at startup when radeon.dpm=1 is enabled

Thank you for your reply. I saw that bug report but I don't think it's the same problem as mine. He's having freezes at login or after, and he can SSH to the machine. On the other hand, my computer freezes immediately after the kernel starts to load, way before anything else can be loaded  (definitely before systemd-journal loads, as there is no log whatsoever). There is no hard-disk activity at all after the freeze, and obviously I cannot SSH to my machine. Are you having similar problems?

Oh, sorry, I read your post a bit too quickly. No, my computer freezes randomly a few minutes after boot. Sometimes I even have time to start Steam and Dota2 before it crashes. Haven't tried to SSH. How does your screen look when it occurs? Mine gets completely scrambled and won't respond to any input.
