Can I do anything about it? Can anyone translate these error messages into plain English, please?

The spindles seem to rotate, however, upon the start up some clicking can be heard which I think is not a good sign at all.

Re: External USB disk drive is not recognized any longer.

Just to be clear, I cannot mount the drive, nor can I see /dev/sdd under /dev, fdisk -l hangs until I physically disconnect the drive. I realize that the drive is probably dying, or dead already, so my goal is to try to salvage as much data as possible.

Re: External USB disk drive is not recognized any longer.

Alright, after somewhat extensive research into the problem and some troubleshooting, I think the nature of the problem is purely mechanical as the drive does a couple things: a) clicks several times upon startup b) kind of recognized but then not really by any system I could get my hands on (Linux, Mac OS X, Windows). There may be a ton of reasons for this, from fried chips on PCB to PCB itself, to the infamous stiction. These are the likeliest problems, as the drive remained always stationery throughout its life and nobody has even moved it around much let alone dropped. I guess I was just very unlucky to see a drive that was treated with care to die like this.

I'm taking it to experts that feel comfortable working with the drive teared apart, as I have no idea how to deal with mechanical failures, nor any experience.
