Two Applications - One With Sound

Recently I have been doing some window manager hopping and landed back at my favorite, openbox. I am not sure what I changes but anytime I start up two applications that use sound the second one does not produce sound. The type of application does not make a difference.

I have played with the settings in pulse audio volume control and the one consistent things is under output I only have "Dummy Output". This based on what I read indicates some other program is taking precedence causing the issue.

Not sure how to troubleshoot or correct.

Any suggestions ?

can you play audio from multiple applications without pulseaudio, i.e. with bare alsa?

I have not attempted that. I have always used pulse with good results until now so I would like to try and resolve.
