Pluma and engrampa crash immediately

Hello to all,

I am running openbox, and I run several packages from the mate repo like caja because I like the way they behave, however, pluma(text editor) and engrampa(archive manager) crash instanly when I run their respective commands. If I invoke them from the terminal I get this:

[jay@dv7-1273cl ~]$ pluma
**
Gtk:ERROR:gtkrecentmanager.c:2112:get_icon_fallback: assertion failed: (retval != NULL)
Aborted (core dumped)

I've been googling it all day long and I can't figure out what the error message means.

any clues would be greately appreciated.
