Cannot start awesome wm from x2go or xrdp

Trying to start awesome window manager on my headless Linode instance using either x2go or xrdp w/xvnc results in the following:

W: awesome: color_init_reply:137: awesome: error, cannot allocate color '#000000'
E: awesome: signal_fatal:320: signal 11, dumping bakctrace

I am launching awesome via ~/.vnc/xstartup which contains the following

#!/bin/sh
exec /usr/bin/awesome >> ~/.cache/awesome/stdout 2>> ~/.cache/awesome/stderr

This happens when using either the official awesome package or awesome-git from aur. This really baffles me because awesome is running just fine with vncserver started via systemd. Also, putting "startxfce4" in my ~/.vnc/xstartup works fine with xrdp and x2go. Only awesome seems to crash when using x2go or xrdp while other window managers are fine.
