LVDS1 never comes back on again once turned off with 'xrandr'

My laptop has two video outputs, VGA and HDM1.

Plugging an external monitor into one, I configured it with xrandr, then turned off the built-in monitor with

    xrandr --output LVDS1 --off

Works, but now LVDS1 is off for good.  Even if I try to turn it back on it again with

    xrandr --output LVDS1 --auto

or even if I quit X.  Now the only monitor which works is an external one.  Rebooting doesn't work either, the framebuffer uses the external monitor only.  So once arch starts, I have no monitor (unless I plug an external one in).  Obviously this doesn't work, so I re-installed the root system.  Tried same thing again, same result.

Reinstalling 'fixed' it, but how do I get my built-in monitor back with doing so again?  There must be a config somewhere telling arch to do this...
