glib2-2.38.2-1 causes some wine programs to not launch

After upgrading glib2 to version 2.38.2-1 from 2.38.1-1 and rebooting my system, I can't get two programs to launch from Steam through Wine. These two programs are Borderlands 2 and Terraria. Steam itself works fine.

I'm not sure if this is also affecting other programs because these are the only two games I've got installed in Wine right now. I'm also not sure if this could be affecting native programs. I am short on time and cannot do any further testing at the moment.

Downgrading glib2 from the latest version (2.38.2-1) to the previous version (2.38.1-1) and rebooting the system allows these programs to run again.

Anyone else having problems launching programs with the latest version of glib2?

Re: glib2-2.38.2-1 causes some wine programs to not launch

I didn't have time to do a whole lot of digging this morning, so I didn't get to launch them from terminal to see what errors they were spitting out. I'm at work now, so can't do any more testing at the moment.

The programs weren't giving any kind of overt errors, they would just fail to start up and silently crash.

I'll do more tests when I get home.

I'm also having trouble getting terraria to run, but downgrading glib2 to 2.38.1-1 isn't helping.

Re: glib2-2.38.2-1 causes some wine programs to not launch

ok.. i tested a bit... sadly its not a glib2 issue for me..
something different then.
i tried new wineprefixes and the same versions of wine that it surely worked but still same error with FL studio.. rest of the wine stuff seems to work..i have no clue anymore..nothing usefull in debug logs also

Re: glib2-2.38.2-1 causes some wine programs to not launch

Tried a new wineprefix it worked once. Also tried downgrading wine to 1.7.5-1 and 1.7.5-2 neither worked. Downgraded lib32-mesa glibmm libdrm lib32-libdrm as well back to November 17's packages.

Re: glib2-2.38.2-1 causes some wine programs to not launch

Are you guys rebooting PC after downgrading? Issue persisted for me until reboot, which is why I specified in the OP that I was rebooting after downgrading.

I also got some terminal output.

Terraria was spitting this out:

fixme:thread:SetThreadStackGuarantee (0x32fbf4): stub
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Borderlands 2 was giving this:

fixme:heap:HeapSetInformation (nil) 1 (nil) 0
Trace/breakpoint trap (core dumped)

Re: glib2-2.38.2-1 causes some wine programs to not launch

I've got everything working now with glib2-2.38.2-1, and I'm pretty sure the issue was from trying to update the system through a terminal window.

Through all of the upgrading and downgrading while trying to nail this thing down, I noticed that after upgrading glib2 typing exit to close out the terminal window never worked and always just caused the window to hang and sit there forever (and I would end up just force closing it).

This lead me to believe that maybe the upgrade wasn't being handled properly. So I upgraded glib2 via the console rather than using a terminal window, rebooted, and now the programs I was having issues with are working properly.

Have you been trying to perform a system upgrade through a terminal window? If so, try doing it instead through a console.

If that doesn't work, then I'm really tapped out. This bug has really been hard to track down because console window output from these programs was is really unhelpful.

EDIT: Well, after a reboot this problem has randomly started happening again. I have no clue what to do at this point. I'm starting to think that this is the same issue as this thread, because I also am not able to launch native programs (like Kerbal Space Program) either.

I don't even think glibc may even be the problem anymore, and it could have just been a fluke that my upgrading/downgrading of it did anything. I believe something else is to blame here and all of the effort I've put in so far is inconsequential.

If a mod would like to close this thread so discussion may be consolidated here, that would be fine.
