Touchpad picks up fingers above surface

Occasionally my touchpad will pick up fingers that are not actually touching the pad, but hovering just above it.  This is how I comfortably use my touchpad, so I can't just keep my fingers high up.  It's a synaptics touchpad, and I've been looking over the documentation for the driver's options, but it's not overly clear what I should be changing.  What parameters for the driver should I change in order to make it less sensitive so my fingers have to actually be on the pad?
