realtek wifi on lenovo x240

I'm trying to enable wifi on my x240
I tried both the drivers specified here https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wi … up#Realtek
but cant figure out what driver is being used
here is lspci -k output

02:00.0 Unassigned class [ff00]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 5227 (rev 01)
	Subsystem: Lenovo Device 2214
	Kernel driver in use: rtsx_pci
	Kernel modules: rtsx_pci
03:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 818b
Subsystem: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 001b
[wolfie@think-x240 ~]$

also it doesnt show up with 'ip addr'

Also I didnt find anything on x240 in the forums.
How do I enable it?

Re: realtek wifi on lenovo x240

How about the output of lspci -vnns 03:00.0 ?

I did a quick google search for this 818b, and I came up with this ubuntu bug report which seems to indicate that (assuming that it is the same HW) it is not yet supported in the kernel.  But in order to ensure that this HW matches what you have there, you need to run the lspci command above.

Well... unfortunately, that is as far as I can get you.  It would seem that you are pretty much just stuck waiting until realtek gets around to supporting this in the kernel.

Re: realtek wifi on lenovo x240

I figured as much. Its kinda sad though; I spent 2 days trying to figure out the whole EFI scene and when I finally did manage to setup a bootable system, I cant use it! LOL
I wonder if I could get it replaced with centrino.

Re: realtek wifi on lenovo x240

Just be aware that Lenovo whitelists their own wireless cards.  So if you are going to go hunting for a compatible card, you will need to figure out which FRUs are acceptable for your machine and search specifically for those.  On my E430, I got it with the realtek card and it was the biggest piece of shit I have ever experienced.  So I went hunting for alternatives.  I found that I have a choice of basically four different cards.  Besides the realtek on my machine, there is the Centrino 2230, a broadcom 1x1 with bluetooth, and a broadcom 2x2 with bluetooth.  Some serious ebay hunting, and I was able to get the intel and the broadcom 2x2 for relatively cheap.

Re: realtek wifi on lenovo x240

If you go to the Lenovo site and wade around through its less than ideal interface, you should be able to find an FRU part list for your machine.  Lenovo is pretty good about making service documents available for their machines.

Re: realtek wifi on lenovo x240

here's the FRU listing:
http://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkP … 131008.pdf
and these are what I found on ebay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Network-7 … 0678411784
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Network-7 … 1261687154

Will these work?
also,
are AC cards compatible with G routers?

edit: apparently 7260 has Bluetooth issues but I guess I could live with that.

Re: realtek wifi on lenovo x240

You need to find the ones that are specidfically marked with the FRU.  So the normal ones will not work because there will be no FRU to pass the bios' whitelist of approvied cards.   So search by FRU rather than by card model.

Re: realtek wifi on lenovo x240

Am planning on getting an x240 soon, and was wondering if I could continue to use Arch Linux with it. Any resolution to this WIFI issue?

@silverbucket, get your machine with an intel or broadcom card.

Re: realtek wifi on lenovo x240

The PCI Product ID is listed in a realtek driver from the staging directory:

drivers/staging/rtl8821ae/pci.h:111:#define RTL_PCI_8192EE_DID 0x818B /*8192ee*/

It'll probably take to at least 3.15 before it enters mainline.

I actually read it will be in 3.14. Now guess what: the reason they quoted for a rush staging was not Lenovo hardware, but that it is used in one of the steam boxes ;-)  Good luck anyway.

Re: realtek wifi on lenovo x240

Maybe because it is in the steam boxes, this driver might actually work properly as well.  That would certainly be a ncie surprise...

Re: realtek wifi on lenovo x240

Are you sure it's the corresponding driver for this wireless card ? In the launchpad bug report it is RTL8192EE and it is RTL8821AE is kernel staging

Re: realtek wifi on lenovo x240

Yes, take the git link, browse to "pci.h" Lekensteyn quoted from and you will see it as well, along with many other Realtek devices.

Re: realtek wifi on lenovo x240

Well, I built last kernel version (3.14-rc6) with activating this driver in make menuconfig and load it manually after boot but it does not work. Anyone know why ?

Nobody is going to be able to help you with this if you don't actually provide any useful information.

Additionally, trying to steal the focus of a thread to your own issue is referred to as 'hijacking the thread' and is not polite.  If you want help with your issue, open a new thread and link back to this one if you think it is relevant, and provide actual useful information.
