Steam seg faulting at start

Since a couple of days, steam stopped working so I tried to go with the STEAM_RUNTIME=0 steam approach, it complained about missing libs and stuff, but I finally managed to install all of them (included that dreaded lib32-networkmanager).

Steam doesn't work at all giving similar errors:

Re: Steam seg faulting at start

I got the same error like you while i was trying to start steam with my non-standard linux-pf kernel.
I have rebooted with the original arch kernel and after that steam running fine.

I dont know why.

So my question:
Do you run a customized or non-default kernel?

Perhaps this information is useful for someone with the same problem or someone who can give you more advices.

Re: Steam seg faulting at start

I haven't. I haven't been able to try on another kernel because with the core linux kernel, it gets stuck when opening X (guess I have an issue with fglxr, but that's another matter).

Re: Steam seg faulting at start

Does anyone of you have fixed this problem?
If got the same segmentation fault @ line 755 as all of you and found no way to fix it.
I tried catalyst-hook, catalyst-test which didn't help.
Running with current mesa-git drivers works so i guess its a driver problem.

but the performance is really poor compared to the catalyst's performance (on desktop) so it's kind of not useable for me.
Is someone else using a dual-monitor or dual-head configuration?

Re: Steam seg faulting at start

Nope, I haven't had any luck. So far it's look it's a problem with the combo fglrx + steam, so it seems one of them it's being the culprit.

We should try to isolate the error, maybe the steam or flgrx bug trackers could help.

Re: Steam seg faulting at start

I made some progress today.

My setup is as follows:
I've got 2 GPU's installed in my system, 1 HD7870 and 1 HD5870.
I've got 3 Monitors and 1 TV connected.
My left screen is connected to my HD5870, the other screens are connected to my HD7870.
Earlier i had my left and my right screen connected to my HD5870 but i couldn't get them aligned correct with amdcccle.

When i enable my main screen and my TV steam runs fine, as soon as i enable a third screen steam is crashing.

Here is the log of steam crashing:

Re: Steam seg faulting at start

Perhaps you're suffering from the same bug as me.

I solved my Steam issue using:

LC_ALL=C steam

the first time.

I'll try that but i don't bet on it because it seems to depend on my screen configuration.

Re: Steam seg faulting at start

This resolved for me by updating to the latest beta driver from AMD, which is available in the aur as catalyst-test 14.1-1.  This driver supports Xorg 1.15, which is running steam without error on my machine.  My GPU is XFX 7870-HD.

My current kernel, catalyst-version and xorg-version are:

[volle@volle-arch steam_data]$ uname -r

xorg-server 1.14.5-11
[volle@volle-arch steam_data]$ pacman -Q catalyst-test
catalyst-test 13.111-1

Did you update to xorg-server 1.15?  Here are the versions I am using.

[afa]$ pacman -Q xorg-server catalyst-test linux
xorg-server 1.15.0-5
catalyst-test 14.1-1
linux 3.13.2-1

I am not running multiple monitors, but steam crashed with a segmentation fault on my system with xorg-server 1.13, and worked fine after I upgraded to xorg-server-1.15.

linux 3.13.2-1

I am not running multiple monitors, but steam crashed with a segmentation fault on my system with xorg-server 1.13, and worked fine after I upgraded to xorg-server-1.15.

Yes i'm running the same versions you are. It did not work with my 4 screens attached but since i created 1 big virtual screen out of 3 of my physical screens everything is working fine for me. I did this after upgrading to xorg 115 so i don't know if this would have worked with xorg 114 or an older catalyst version.

Re: Steam seg faulting at start

I have updated to xorg-server 1.15, same versions as you, and I continue with the error:

pacman -Q xorg-server catalyst-utils linux
xorg-server 1.15.0-5
catalyst-utils 14.1-1
linux 3.12.9-2

Re: Steam seg faulting at start

My problem has been fixed installing lib32-libxinerama.

No idea why because I only use 1 screen, but now steam launchs.

I haven't tried any game yet

Wow, thank you. That fixed the problem for me too.

No idea what happened. It was working 10 minutes ago. I closed it, open it, and fail time.
