Why are you using an old kernel? Is your system up to date?

Okay, I am running a full system update, as that is 900 MB and my internet connection is very slow, I will have more updates tomorrow.

Are you using GNOME (or trying to)? My experience is that GNOME Shell does not play nicely with AMD cards full stop (setting Tear-Free to ON in amdcccle helps, but it's not great).

From where did you install them and which packages did you install? There are at least three different ways to install them on Arch, and knowing which one you did means we can work out how to deal with this.

Re: Xorg Fails to Start (Catalyst 13.11 Beta)

I had made the mistake of downloading and installing the driver directly from AMD and ended up with what is probably the same issue you're having.

As a start I would direct you to this page of the wiki and suggest you follow this route. It's actually a pretty straight-forward set up and works well. One thing I don't recall seeing on the page that I ran into as a problem is you need to make sure the headers file for your kernel is installed. I'm new to Arch as well and I've found as long as you follow the wiki and take the time to read it first, things work splendidly.

You will most likely need to remove the AMD driver and follow the process described there.

Re: Xorg Fails to Start (Catalyst 13.11 Beta)

Hi,
Sorry for bumping my post. I have installed the amd drivers using yaourt. I have tried another time using Vi0l0s repo but that did not work as X would hang. I am using GNOME.

Which one of the packages did you install with yaourt?

Last time I tried GNOME with an AMD card, it failed miserably, with both the radeon driver and AMD Catalyst.

Re: Xorg Fails to Start (Catalyst 13.11 Beta)

If I may ask what is your card make? and try catalyst-test from the AUR as this can help. I have tried my card AMD HD 6620G with the catalyst-test driver on both gnome and kde and it works on both.

Re: Xorg Fails to Start (Catalyst 13.11 Beta)

Note that you can edit a post.

Did you reinstall catalyst after the system update? If you got a kernel update it has to be rebuilt. Perhaps you should make a new topic about your internet connection if you haven't solved it yet.

Re: Xorg Fails to Start (Catalyst 13.11 Beta)

Assuming you are not using the catalyst package from the AUR, but one of it's companions like catalyst-hook or catalyst-total and you are only using one card and one screen, run

sudo aticonfig --initial
sudo catalyst_build_module all

Also, trying enabling the Tear-Free option for GNOME.

So I ran those commands and enabled the tear-free desktop but the same thing happened.

Arch is a system designed for the more competent user, if you are going to constantly ask for help every step of the way you may need to rethink which operating system you may be using.

This doesn't mean all the kernel modules are built though. I have to check my updates and do the headers before I do the kernel, otherwise pacman will fail to build the fglrx module (because standard updates install the kernel then the headers, not the fight order for the fglrx kernel modules).

Found that out by installing Catalyst-hook, but not enabling the service.

I will try running another system update and installing catalyst-hook. That might help.
