Total alsa mystery

My audio is behaving so weirdly and I think it's probably all related.

Hitting F6 in Alsamixer I have the options of 0 and 1 HD-Audio Generic. Right now in 0 HD-Audio Generic everything is unmuted (except mic) and everything except Master is at 100. My .i3status.conf volume indicator is set to device = "default", mixer = "Master", mixer_idx = 0 (if set to 1 then i3bar gives no volume reading).

The strange thing is Alsamixer Master says 52. i3bar says 77. If I put alsamixer master up to 75, i3bar says 90.

btw, the PCM slider in alsamixer has no mute option, and adjusting it has no effect on volume of an mp3 played in mplayer.
