External Hard Drive USB 3 abnormally slow

Hi there!

First of all, let me apologize for the fact that this forum is not really where I should expose my concern as it's not related to Archlinux and not even Linux, but I don't know where to go, and as I trust the skills of people in here.... Anyway, sorry in advance if this concern is too "out of context"

I have an external hard drive WD Elements 1.5TB that suddenly stopped working few months ago. So I recently bought an empty case S-ATA to USB 3 because I wanted to know if it was the hard drive itself or the case that was broken, and it was the case.
The thing is that, on my laptop, whether it's ArchLinux or Windows Vista, this hard drive is really slow, whereas it's not the case of my friend's MacBook with USB 3 ports. My laptop has only USB 2 ports, but it should not be a problem as both versions are supposed to be compatible right? I know it's not really the same, but I have a flash doggle USB 3 and I don't have any problem with it... But this hard drive is really abnormally slow... It takes between 5 and 15 seconds to open a folder containing only 10 which are subfolders (so, not thumbnail to load or whatever in case of media files).
I thought about a power problem, so I plug the power cable directly into the wall; but exactly the same result... I talked around me a lot about it, but no clue of what could be the problem....
Does it sound familiar to some one in here????

PS: I think I'm gonna try it on a MacBook Pro with USB 2 ports tomorrow...

EDIT: The hard drive is formatted in NTFS.
