encrypt hook takes a long time

Until today I was running an old kernel (3.9.8-1), and full filesystem encryption (luks + LVM) worked fine, and the encrypt hook took about 5seconds to process.
Now I upgraded to the latest kernel (3.12.6-1) and the encrypt hook hangs for about 3 minutes, doing something on the HDD, and then everything proceeds normally. How can I debug this problem?
