Xorg freezes if listening to music while playing Minecraft

Xorg freezes whenever I listen to music while playing Minecraft. WHEN it freezes isn't very predictable, no consistency in the number of tracks or length of time. I've attempted to check various system logs for clues with no success. Music continues to play just fine but the GUI is effectively dead until I jump into a TTY and reboot the machine. I suspect pulseaudio or the graphics driver but without knowing what logs to check, I'm totally stumped. Would love to know if anyone else is having freezes triggered by playing audio, with or without Minecraft as a variable. I've had to deal with similar freezes/crashes over the years, with various music players on various desktop environments with NO idea how to go about diagnosing and fixing the problem. Clementine is my player of choice, but it happens with VLC as well.
