Can't connect to any bluetooth device with bluetoothctl

I can't seem to get it to connect to my Bose Soundlink Mini, or my cell phone.  Both can pair, but won't connect; here is what happens with the bose speaker:

[geoff@arch ~]$ bluetoothctl
[NEW] Controller 44:6D:57:4A:2E:A5 arch [default]
[NEW] Device 00:0C:8A:95:36:32 Bose Mini SoundLink
[NEW] Device 0C:71:5D:53:46:70 SCH-I405
[bluetooth]# power on
Changing power on succeeded
[bluetooth]# devices
Device 00:0C:8A:95:36:32 Bose Mini SoundLink
Device 0C:71:5D:53:46:70 SCH-I405
[bluetooth]# info 00:0C:8A:95:36:32
Device 00:0C:8A:95:36:32
        Name: Bose Mini SoundLink
        Alias: Bose Mini SoundLink
        Class: 0x240428
        Icon: audio-card
        Paired: yes
        Trusted: yes
        Blocked: no
        Connected: no
        LegacyPairing: no
        UUID: Audio Sink (0000110b-0000-1000-8000-00805f9b34fb)
UUID: A/V Remote Control Target (0000110c-0000-1000-8000-00805f9b34fb)
        UUID: A/V Remote Control (0000110e-0000-1000-8000-00805f9b34fb)
[bluetooth]# connect 00:0C:8A:95:36:32
Attempting to connect to 00:0C:8A:95:36:32
Failed to connect: org.bluez.Error.Failed

There seems to be precious little information on troubleshooting this online.  The only two possibilities I've seen are that pulseaudio has yet to release a version that works with bluez 5, supposedly (I've got 5.13) or the device is refusing the connection.

Either way, I don't know how to check if one of these is the case.

Update: So the speaker has two options with its blutooth button: flashing blue and flashing white.  I know that when it is connected it is solid white.  Before I was trying to connect with the flashing blue light on.
When I just tried it with flashing white, I get this:

[bluetooth]# connect 00:0C:8A:95:36:32
Attempting to connect to 00:0C:8A:95:36:32
Failed to connect: org.bluez.Error.Failed
[CHG] Device 00:0C:8A:95:36:32 Connected: yes
[CHG] Device 00:0C:8A:95:36:32 Connected: no
[CHG] Device 00:0C:8A:95:36:32 Connected: yes
[CHG] Device 00:0C:8A:95:36:32 Connected: no
[CHG] Device 00:0C:8A:95:36:32 Connected: yes
[CHG] Device 00:0C:8A:95:36:32 Connected: no
[CHG] Device 00:0C:8A:95:36:32 Connected: yes
[CHG] Device 00:0C:8A:95:36:32 Connected: no
[CHG] Device 00:0C:8A:95:36:32 Connected: yes
[CHG] Device 00:0C:8A:95:36:32 Connected: no

There is a good 30 seconds between no to yes, and 5 seconds from yes to no...
Is there a log somewhere that describes why it is disconnecting right away?
