Just installed arch linux, after trying for 5 hours. I'm some what tired and need a bit of help. I installed kde 3.5 and works wonderfully as root. When I log on as a normal user as soon as a window is moved or something trys to get drawn in the window it turns white and the desktop wallpaper goes white. Then shortly afterwords the system hardlocks and only the mouse will respond.
Things I've tryed:
[root@myhost david]# pacman -Syu

Sadly I don't know the root of your problem, however if you want to try reinstalling again (probably won't make a difference tbh, but worth a shot) you can just delete file(s) in question with rm -rf /usr/share/grub, that'll solve your problem. You could also do a force installation with pacman -Sf, but the first option is better.

I really don't want to use lilo, plus the 0.7 installer recommends grub which I would use anyways. I don't understand why it wants to intsall lilo and is there a way to block it from being installed?
also when i added groups for this user I noticed there wasn't a group for the cdrom and video like in other distros I've used.

It irritates me too... isn't there the ability to select packages from the CD that you do/don't want? I can't remember, it's so long since I installed

cdrom = optical group
video = video group -> I have a video group in mine...

ok I fixed the lilo problem, it wasn't acctually with lilo, it was an update problem with grub itself. Here is what I did:
pacman -R grub
pacman -Sy
pacman -S grub
pacman -Su
pacman backs up your menu.1st file as menu.lst.pacsave
installing grub again made a new menu.1st file that contained a default setup.
I added the user before I had xorg installed, I'm guessing thats why It wasn't there. Its in /etc/group now.
