xterm has no display?

Going through getting my system set up for and made it pretty much to the end of what I would like to call phase one (install and configure), but when I try to start xterm via putty on my windows system, I get the following output:

as root (I know it is a bad idea/not recommended):

 xterm

The full text of the error or warning message cannot be safely formatted
in this environment. You may get a more descriptive message by running the

xterm: Xt error: Can't open display: %s
xterm: DISPLAY is not set

As a normal user:

 xterm
xterm: Xt error: Can't open display:
xterm: DISPLAY is not set

I have followed the guides and used the steps here for xterm/putty on windows:

I have rebooted things to makes sure everything was seemingly OK, but nothing seems to make a difference.  The question now would be if the issue is on the windows side or the Arch side as it is what throws the actual error.  If we need any logs or command output, let me know and I will generate it as needed.

Did you install your display drivers

chipset doesn't help, what is your graphics, intel, ati, nvidia? if its intel hd graphics, the xorg package is xf86-video-intel

sorry if I'm being condescending, but gotta make sure before we start troubleshooting lol

Make sure that X11 forwarding is enabled in your saved session in putty, "X11Forwarding" is set to "Yes" in sshd_config and sshd has been restarted. Then "echo $DISPLAY" should show e.g. "localhost:10.0".

OK, going back through some things, in nano /etc/ssh/ssh_config

ForwardX11 yes  <---  I found that this was still set to no even though I uncommented it.

rebooting...

will have to let you know the results later since my system has fallen out of range and will need to be hard reset again...This is another issue I was having that I thought I resolved, but it sees the system boot out of range and the only fix is to hard reset.  It would make for another thread, but here is a log from a failed boot if you care to look, but the thought was if I can resolve xterm issue to start over to see if I can eliminate boot issue that occurs so randomly.

ssh_config is for the client, sshd_config is for the server. As you're using putty as a client, you don't need to touch ssh_config.

You have to explicitly enable X11 forwarding on the host.

Been scratching my head on this subject to the point that I went ahead and started over.  I thought it would be best in order to ensure a clean system.  I worked through the beginners guide from beginning to end and have my system to the point that I am running openbox.  At the console, I can run startx and I get into my openbox session where I can run firefox like a normal desktop, so I know that part works.

The one thing that I thought of most recently is whether I need x running or not when I connect with putty and execute xterm.  Till now all I have done is have my system booted to the command line.  Does it instead require to be in the X session when trying to run xterm remotely?  Is that the missing piece because I still end up with the same results even after re-installing.  I am asking instead of trying simply because I am away from the system and cannot currently test it, so instead I wanted to just ask to see if that might be the answer to my problems.  Thanks
