I don't know what else to try. When I try to run bitcoin-qt with option "-min" the window still pops up. I even tried a config file like explained in the arch wiki but still does not work. I am using Awesome WM. What can I do?

That's not the correct switch, as described on the page you linked to or in the man page.

Are you talking about the minimizetotray switch? That does not work either...

No.
min=['0'|'1']
Enable or disable start bitcoind minimized.

Yes, I tried all of these various formats:
bitcoin-qt -min
bitcoin-qt -min=1
bitcoin-qt -min='1'
bitcoin-qt --min
bitcoin-qt --min=1
bitcoin-qt --min='1'
Still opens the window on start...

And what happens if you use the example provided?
min=1

Yes, as a switch and in the config file. It's not working...
