Installing a game on a separate partition?

Hi there!

I'm wondering if it's possible to install something like dota 2 on my windows partition and link it, because my arch partition is only a modest 20gb. A couple friends of mine do that but they aren't around right now so I can't ask them, so I was wondering how it's done?

Please and thanks!

Re: Installing a game on a separate partition?

steam does ask where it should install a game to, just point it to a partition that has enough free space

I'm not sure if you can install dota 2 to an NTFS partition because NTFS does not preserve UNIX permissions. Steam may complain about that.

I wouldn't recommended it

Basically this plus I wouldnt be too sure that the file structure of dota 2 would be the same unless you installed it under wine ?

Personally I wouldn't mix two different partitions that are designed for two completely different operating systems.

If you still want to do this; create a special file on the ntfs-partition that you mount as a disk in linux. Have a look at losetup for that.

Re: Installing a game on a separate partition?

I do not know about steam, but i have my wine-games all on another ntfs-partition on another drive atleast.
Same one i use in windows (though that happens rarely), and by either multi-installing to the same place, or exporting and fiddling with registry one can save space that way.
But well, ntfs is no issue normally, atleast not for non-permission-critical stuff.
