XBMC locks on stop with Intel Haswell iGPU P4600 and vaapi

Hello,

I have just purchased some new hardware and am experiencing an issue where if I press 'stop' (via the x key or via any means such as http etc) XBMC will lock up, requiring a 'systemctl restart xbmc' command. BUT, this only happens on vaapi accelerated videos, h264 etc are fine.

Arch is installed without a desktop, as usual, and only the bare minimum is installed to get XBMC working. This is tried and tested on my old system using these drivers and packages...

xorg-server xorg-server-utils xorg-xinit libva-intel-driver xf86-video-intel

Finally, I autostart XBMC (which is working as expected) using systemctl enable / start xbmc.

Which hardware?

Intel Xeon 1245 v3 Haswell CPU - Integrated graphics are P4600 - Socket 1150
Supermicro X10SAT
16GB RAM

What have I tried?

Fresh install, XBMC is the only piece of software installed (and it's deps) and the issue occurs immediately upon 'stop' on any vaapi video.
i915 is in the MODULES part of mkinitcpio.
rootfs has been ext4, btrfs and xfs - no difference.
I have installed the various xf86-intel drivers from both the official repos and from AUR. Same with libva packages, issue remained.
Rolled back to XBMC 12.2-5 (from the current version in the repo's tonight that is 12.3-5? I think?). No difference.

The only thing that resolves this issue is turning off vaapi acceleration under XBMC settings.

I'm going a little bit bonkers tonight. Does anyone know why this might be happening or have anything else I might be able to try please? My *guess* is that it's a problem with X, but it's a guess.
Previously I have had great success with my i5 3470 and it's hd4000 graphics, so I assumed that the Haswell Xeon chip would be just fine.

I can't help but can offer the suggestion that you also post this on the official xbmc forums.

I have, thanks - they didn't know either.

FYI, I have done some more tests just now and the issue IS present under OpenSUSE 13.1 running XBMC 12.3 also (same as Arch) but is NOT present under OpenElec running XBMC 12.2.

So naturally, this leads me down the path of downgrading XBMC to 12.2 tomorrow once I've reinstalled Arch. See you then!

Same happened to my configuration too: i7-4770k, Asus H87i-PLUS mobo with most recent BIOS. I try to solve this problem ~5 months ago, with no success. I had XBMC 12.2 and 12.3 (from official Arch repo) installed, both stop after VAAPI accelerated video playback, only "systemctl restart xbmc" helps. If VAAPI is switched off in XBMC, everything goes well, and fortunately the CPU is strong enough to decode even the Full HD videos. For me this is a miracle after using Atom CPU's for HTPCs for years.  smile

Your post is the first I have found so far, describing this problem. Could you solve it?

Additionally I update my system every week, so I use the newest kernel and modules. Only for testing I have installed the AUR versions of Intel DRI driver and VAAPI, same result... I have tried to change some BIOS settings related to iGPU as well, nothing happened. sad I have tested VAAPI playback with VLC, it crashed as well, but mplayer works. Unfortunately in case of mplayer I could not get audio working trough HDMI, this is why I can imagine, that it is related somehow to VAAPI AND audio, not only to VAAPI.

@ironicbadger

We seem to be running the same hardware for the same purposes. Your guides on your blog and on the unraid forum have been invaluable and I am eternally grateful.  Phenomenal work!

I'm experiencing the same issues with P4600 and VAAPI.  Have you had any luck on Arch?  I've tested on Ubuntu 14.04 and VAAPI works properly albeit with Intel's official drivers.
