Complete System Crash

Hello

Currently since around September I have experiancing complete freeze of the system. I have tried many different ways to try and diagnose the problem which it reaches this state such as changing ttys and attempting to connect through ssh but with no avail which ends up resulting in a forced reboot.

This only appears to happen when I have a game open with wine (WoW/ CS:GO.. or yet to experiance a crash with other wine apps) while using dual screen, I have taken out one of the monitors for a LAN for a couple of days, which I have never recieved this crash (and this crash happens every 1 - 3 dayish at a time). I have used KDE in the past and now recently using Openbox and the problem still persists. So to me this could be a problem with Wine while using Dual Screen, but I am unsure. I have asked a fellow (more knowledgeable) Archer to enlighten me on my problem which he stated it could be an Nvidia driver problem which I will use nouveau soon to see if there are any changes... but I would like to know if any of you could also help me with this?

I may also note before hand that I have had this dual monitor setup since I have installed Arch and have been playing the same games without problems untill this has suddenly sparked up months later after installation...
My system is also updated by -Syu every couple of days.

Here is a picture after the crash.

Here is Journalctl -b -1 after the crash
Pastebin

I have noticed this line which could of been the crash point ?

Jan 14 23:54:08 nickarch kernel: threaded-ml[753]: segfault at 0 ip (null) sp 00007fbfd52b8bf8 error 14 in ts3client_linux_amd64[400000+bcb000]

So I decided to do a Journalctl -xn -b -1..

So this is flagged up as a possible bug possibly?

But then again.. After a same crash 5 days earlier the logs show different.. throwing lots of dbus errors.

Re: Complete System Crash

1. Does this happen only when dual screening?
2. Do you remember the date of the first crash? If yes, can you can pacman logs to see what was updated prior to the first crash?  Ideally, it would be best to downgrade if possible and test to see if it is a new/regressed bug in current.
3. Are you using the same wine version as months ago?  Are you using a frontend like playonlinux?

I'll add more questions as they come to mind.  But at this moment, just from your logs I do not have any recommendations.  All I can think of are newly introduced/regressed bugs in nvidia, wine, and xinerama. Along with dependent packages to those.

Maybe someone has a better idea to go about this.

Re: Complete System Crash

1. Does this happen only when dual screening?

The only time I have not dual screened with my PC setup was last week which was for around 2 - 3 days and did not have any crash what so ever, the PC was on for a good 8 hours per day and I was using the same applications that I normally use. I am happy to use one monitor for a week  though if it can possibly help diagnose the problem (to see if it crashes or not)

2. Do you remember the date of the first crash? If yes, can you can pacman logs to see what was updated prior to the first crash?  Ideally, it would be best to downgrade if possible and test to see if it is a new/regressed bug in current.

To be honest I am unsure the exact dates this has started happening, all I know is that it has been happening at the earliest September. I have installed WoW with wine late October which I know for a fact that I was already suffering from these problems when playing CS:GO. So it can be any time within September / October, but I can compile a list of logs between these times when I get home as I am currently at work.

3. Are you using the same wine version as months ago?  Are you using a frontend like playonlinux?

I have always been updating whenever I can, so no it wouldn't be the same version as wine is updated around every couple of weeks. All my wine applications are installed through just using the {Insertnamehere}.exe installers apart from steam which was installed through winetricks.

I'll add more questions as they come to mind.  But at this moment, just from your logs I do not have any recommendations.  All I can think of are newly introduced/regressed bugs in nvidia, wine, and xinerama. Along with dependent packages to those.

This is what I am fearing. I don't mind bugs or problems, in fact I sometimes tend to like them as it allows me to fix / learn more about my system but this problem is just too vague to even know where to begin trouble shooting properly.

The only way I can currently think of is eliminating possibilities which could take weeks to trouble shoot and cover the different variables that is causing the problems.

>>>>>>>>> Use one monitor and continue using programs as normal for a week or so
>>>>>>>>> Install the nouveau driver and try using programs with dual screen for a week or so
>>>>>>>>> Downgrading wine or NVidia packages
>>>>>>>>> Uninstall KDE or change KDE options as the dbus in the logs is throwing up

Jan 10 20:15:30 nickarch org.kde.powerdevil.backlighthelper[2551]: QDBusConnection: system D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave.

which after a quick look shows that its causing crashes for other people:
Link:
cuttingedge.com

Though.. This might be just a scape goat to the actual problem..

From today I will apply one of these above methods to help me diagnose the problem and the next time (If it crashes again) to compile logs for the sessions that crashed. Such as:  xorg.1.log / journalctl -b -1 / journalctl -xn -b -1 and journalctl | grep "{insert crash date}"

If there is any thing else anyone can ask me to look at / answer or look at I will do my best to provide that and I am very grateful for anyone's help.

Re: Complete System Crash

To be honest, it can likely be any of those above.... which sucks because like you said it is hard to track it down especially since it occurs every 3 days of normal use.  Oh, one more thing to check.  Temperatures.  Try to log temps when you play games.  Could the crash be from overheating?  Also two screens = more work on GPU so it could be another thing to look at.  Bump this thread when you find more info.

Anyways, good luck on the search.

Re: Complete System Crash

In your first post, the error seemed to come from TeamSpeak3. Have you tried uninstalling that and seeing if the error still occurs?

Re: Complete System Crash

Okay just an update for now. I have removed KDE by

pacman -Rdd kde

Using Openbox and did my usual jargon for the evening and did not have a crash, but its early days we will see over a couple of more days.

I have taken note of this and I will uninstall it if I receive any more crashes and the Journal picks up the same error. I would like to trouble shoot this one step at a time before making too many changes. But is it normal for it to be called / labelled under amd ? as I have an Intel setup.  I just did a normal installation Teamspeak3 from the official repos.

Re: Complete System Crash

Okay I have just had another crash after a week while playing WoW under Wine. I have looked at the logs again but again to me they dont really give me that much information to why the crash has happened.

I am really stuck here.. Suppose I will try disabling the monitor for now and see if that makes any difference..

EDIT :: I have attempted to use the nouveau driver but apart from loading the desktop interface nothing particually displayed properly and / or crashed.

Re: Complete System Crash

Please excuse a newbie question. It looks like you have got nvidia and nouveau drivers installed together? Is this normal and correct? There is a lot of:-

04.673] (II) config/udev: Adding input device HDA NVidia HDMI/DP,pcm=9 (/dev/input/event16)
[   904.673] (II) No input driver specified, ignoring this device.

going on.

nouveau is not installed at all,

archKartious
> ~ sudo pacman -Ss nouveau
extra/nouveau-dri 10.0.2-1
    Mesa drivers for Nouveau
extra/xf86-video-nouveau 1.0.10-2 (xorg-drivers xorg)
Open Source 2D acceleration driver for nVidia cards
multilib/lib32-nouveau-dri 10.0.2-1
    Mesa drivers for Nouveau (32-bit)

What you are seeing there is that the system is detecting my graphics card having an HDMI input which is not used: so it is ignoring it. Besides... there is nothing nouveau about it.. it specifically says that its an nvidia input device and I have nouveau blacklisted in modprobe... So I am not quite sure what you are trying to point out here
