So I'm on xfce with networkmanager, and the nm-applet is now appearing twice in the top panel. It just did it on today's boot-up and the last time I was on I was mostly ssh-ing into another remote server and didn't do much on my laptop. How can I find what's starting nm-applet in the panel?
Also, it still works fine with no issues connecting to my school's wpa wifi.

Don't start it twice
There are several places it can start. xfce4 has configurations that configure programs that start with a new session in the configuration panel.
They could be in your local autostart directory (look under ~/.config)
It could be started from an .xinitrc file, if you are using startx or slim.
