uvesafb stopped working, error -5, request region 0x3c0-0x3e0 failed

uvesafb was set up on my system in accordance with the instructions in the wiki and was working. Then a few weeks ago, presumably after an upgrade, it stopped working. My virtual consoles are now 640x480. The directory cat /sys/bus/platform/drivers/uvesafb/uvesafb.0/ no longer exists. Extensive googling does not help. Here's what dmesg says:

[james@j ~]$ dmesg | grep uvesa
[ 1.363414] uvesafb: NVIDIA Corporation, MCP79 Board - mcp7a-so, Chip Rev , OEM: NVIDIA, VBE v3.0
[ 1.468554] uvesafb: VBIOS/hardware doesn't support DDC transfers
[ 1.468556] uvesafb: no monitor limits have been set, default refresh rate will be used
[ 1.468769] uvesafb: scrolling: redraw
[ 1.468772] uvesafb: request region 0x3c0-0x3e0 failed
[ 1.468972] uvesafb: probe of uvesafb.0 failed with error -5

No progress. But it turned out I didn't actually need uvesafb: all I was using it for was to get a native-resolution text console, and for that all I needed was a work-around for bug 39382 to make grub respect the value of GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX set in /etc/default/grub. It turned out that at some point an extra 'Arch Linux' grub menu item had been added which does just that. So I made that my default and uninstalled uvesafb.
