I have been looking for a decent bittorrent client on linux and have thought a couple times that i had found the perfect one.
Azureus seemed perfect, unless you let it run for 24 hours and it freezes your computer up. java... great.
Bttornado seemed great at first, until you have 8 seperate windows open.
rtorrent seemed perfect also, faster dl and upload. then you get the ones that upload 200 times faster than download and you want to limit that "one" only, but there is only a total upload limit, not by torrent.
So here is what i have found as the best linux bt client. abc win32 v3.0.1b
its written in python so this and only this version works perfectly in linux. it has every option that I needed, all torents in 1 window, scheduling, ul dl per torrent, etc... i dont recommend the alpha linux 2.4xx version they have, it didn't work for me because they forgot about unicode in linux, there is a workaround in the forums if you want to give it a try.
So to sum it, use abc windows version v3.0.1b.
I hoped this helped someone, because bit torrent is an important program for me.

Thanks for the tip, I'll be sure to check it out.
Usually I'm satisfied with Azureus since I tend to download bigger files only when I'm not using the machine for anything else. I tried Ktorrent and it seemed nice but it had some problems which I explained in this topic. Haven't tried the svn version from AUR yet, maybe that's less buggy...
Just your basic anime otaku some might even call nijikon.

that was my problem with azureus, big files (anime) and i would leave it on overnight, and half the day, because of work. when i got home from work my computer would be a slug, even after killing java and azureus. i always ended up having to restart the computer windows style.
but abc is written in python, and have had 0 problems, only praise.

What's wrong with bittorrent-curses.py?
Offline
does it allow scheduling, ul/dl speed per torrent and all in one window?

Why don't you submit a bug report to the Azureus devs then? If you are suggesting that Java can't run for longer than 24 hours then you are obviously wrong. If Azureus can't run for 24 hours, then that's Azureus's problem. Windows is written in C++.

A few months ago Azureus was running 24/7 on my computer, while I was working on it (and some very time-consuming computations were being made in background). And it all worked really well.
I'm using a machine with a Celeron 2.4 GHz and 512 MB RAM. The only problem I have with Azureus is quite long starting/closing time.

I like mldonkey with the sancho-gui.
It's really nice to have all the p2p stuff I need in one app. The biggest advantage is the core/gui separation though...

I use ctorrent which is pretty much enough for me. I like command-line tools. 8)
Arch - It's something refreshing

Never had freeze problems with Azureus, but I like Bittorrent 4.x better.
KTorrent SVN is also very nice, although I think its browsing capabilities are unnecessary and redundant. The stable version, on the other hand, is very very broken.

I use the stock bittorrent client. Admittedly, it can jump cpu usage up to like 50% and it goes crazy if you run out of space on a partition, but other than that it's good.
I don't mess with ul/dl speeds per torrent, but I'm sure it'd make a nice feature request.

I just guess i like having more control over the speeds that im giving/taking.
Windows is written in C++.
I wasn't saying windows was written in java, just that using azureus made me have to reboot like you often do in windows.
I didn't have this problem as bad with earlier releases of azureus, so maybe it is a bug.
Also, I wasn't saying java sucks, I'm just saying that I don't like it, and have had problems with most java programs being too slow and using too much ram and eventually slowing my computer down to an unusable state. And my computer is fairly decent.
But anyways i'm happy with abc.

I haven't had a problem with Azureus but this ABC torrent thing is pretty neat. Made a package for AUR at any rate

My point here is that Windows is written in a C/C++/ASM and that's got a reputation for being pants. But, we know that those languages can be used to make extremely fast and reliable software, providing it's used properly. When a program crashes, you never say, "thanks, C". Unless of course it's a Java program, in which case everyone blames the platform first.

Azureus is very nice, but it gets annoying after it updating itself all the time. As far as I know, there's no way to disable this, either.
Offline
Of course you can disable that. It only tells you that there is a new version.
(I used Azureus less than 2 hours, because I set it up for somebody...)
I use the stock bittorrent-client myself. I don't think it has scheduling... but wtf. It's curses... You can schedule with the shell.
And it has up/dl limits per torrent... Been using it for 2.5-3 years now...
screen btdownloadcursey.py --url "http://kickme.to/uberwarez/win98-iso.torrent" --max_upload_rate 0
Enjoy.

The default client is quite good and you're always running the latest bittorrent library.
Offline
Ill try it, but i think i remember it being a seperate window for each torrent, and with 6+ open it gets annoying. maybe it has changed.

Use a window manager that allows tabbing and all is solved.... :-D

One of those tabbing terminals crossed my mind at one point, but everything in 1 window is so nice.

the new bittorrent gui has everything in 1 window.

Or use screen - you can make a special screen session for bittorrent, and use "screen -t `basename $file` bittorrent-curses.py $file" to get a nice little list of them.
I did something similar back in the day... I'l lsee if I still have the script laying around.

Thanks for the pkgbuild cam, i,ve been running it out of a folder on my desktop.
Phrakture that would be cool if you could find the script, i'm interested in trying it. It would give me a good reason to try screen again too.
