[SOLVED] X instant freeze at startx after radeon update

Hey, neutral

I did a system update (see pacman log below) and after rebooting I can no longer start X. It freezes completely so I have to poweroff the computer to reboot.

Using KDM, it freezes just after login.
After disabling KDM, I tried to startx manually. I get some info lines of the X server (no errors) and then it freezes.
I'm using KDE, so I installed openbox, commented the exec startkde line and added the line exec openbox-session in .xinitrc and tried to startx. Same thing: X freezes.

The X logs don't contain anything useful. I just pasted the whole /var/log/Xorg.0.log:

The syslog doesn't contain anything useful either.
journalctl -r gives me a shitload of logs. I just copied the part where I tried to startx but it seems like there's nothing at all. (I get the same dbus messages on my laptop which is working fine, so it's probably not a dbus issue as I thought.) I'm pretty sure that I run the startx command at 15:14, so no logs at all:

Linux desktop 3.13.0-2-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon Jan 27 10:25:23 CET 2014 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Edit:
Related? https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=176322
Maybe a kernel issue with AMD graphics cards. It happened right after upgrading my desktop pc to 3.13.0-2.

I have no idea what's causing the problem.

Edit:
I did a kernel update again to 3.13.1 because I thought this might fix the problem (there are some threads in [testing] about radeon related issues in the 3.13.0 kernel) but it's still the same issue.

Thank you for your help.

Edit:
I finally tried to install the proprietary AMD driver catalyst which is available in the AUR and I had to downgrade Xorg to 1.14 from a backport repository (as catalyst isn't compatible with the latest 1.15 version, as always) and it seems to work now. The catalyst driver by AMD is utter crap (awful performance) but at least I get on my desktop again. smile

The problem seems to be the radeon driver (xf86-video-ati) which got updated.

Edit:
Downgrading xorg-server didn't solve it with radeon. I'm now on kernel 3.13.2-1 and nothing's fixed. I'm almost sure that it's a driver issue.

Is there a way to downgrade from the actual xf86-video-ati (1:7.3.0-1) ?

Help! sad

Edit:
Downgrading to xf86-video-ati-7.2.0 didn't fix it. Same issue. (I found the older versions here: http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-ati)

Edit:
Finally, after messing around for like 10 hours, I managed to fix it by downgrading to linux 3.12.9. What a pain in the neck…

Re: [SOLVED] X instant freeze at startx after radeon update

With kernel 3.13 radeon power managment is enabled by default. You can try appending radeon.dpm=0 (or radeon.runpm=0) to the kernel parameter line.

Re: [SOLVED] X instant freeze at startx after radeon update

You can try the new 3.13.3 kernel and try with radeon.dpm=0 as a kernel parameter. I think issues like these are why 3.13 is being held back from the core repo. You an also try radeon.dpm=1 with the 3.12 kernel to see if dynamic power management is the problem.
