[SLVD]command "startx" leading to a black screen, Xorg.0.log is posted

So when I run the command "startx," the window resizes, then the screen turns black.

When I run the command "grep EE /var/log/Xorg.0.log" I get these errors:

(EE) Failed to load module "glx" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "modesetting" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) VboxVideo(0): Disabling DRI due to missing server functionality.

Let me know what I could do to help fix it!

Thanks!

Re: [SLVD]command "startx" leading to a black screen, Xorg.0.log is posted

I suspect a faulty .xinitrc with no window manager or desktop environment.
Or no .xinitrc at all, which defaults back to using the standard .xinitrc in /etc.

Or... no drivers.

But without logs we cannot point you into a certain direction.

Also post your .xinitrc
I think Jellicent is right in his guess on this one.

Well it looks like I have no .xinitrc at all, what should I do about that? I was going to copy it here along with the log.

Here is the whole log:

As this message suggests, X is closing down after doing everything it was told to do, your problem is simply that you've not told it to do anything. Read the wiki pages about $preferred-desktop-environment* or $preferred-standalone-window-manager*, or the generic startx page.

*note: please don't actually try to find pages entitled $preferred-desktop-environment or $preferred-standalone-window-manager.. search for KDE, or openbox, or dwm, or whatever.

Are you using a desktop environment (DE) like gnome, kde, cinnamon, xfce4?  If so, read their wiki on how to launch through startx with .xinitrc

Also,
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners'_Guide
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/De … nvironment
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xinitrc

Edit: I put more time in this post as this is my 300th post.

Okay, you all are a tremendous help! So I created a ~/.xinitrc file, and populated it with the template from /etc/skel/.xinitrc

I am currently using "exec xterm" in the file.

Now I need to choose a Desktop Environment.

Thank you all so much!
