External media read-only issues

Hi,

I seem to have a problem with external media (sd cards, usb flash, external hdd's etc) constantly mounting read only most of the time. I've found that whenever I have just completed a fresh install, everything I plug in works just great. Then after a while, i'll plug something in and go to move files only to find that the device has now been mounted read only, despite me making no changes that should affect this (at least that I know of).

I'm curious as to why this would suddenly start happening and looking for help or suggestions to hopefully sort this out.

Cheers!!

Re: External media read-only issues

What filesystems do these external media use?

Sakura:-
Mobo: MSI MAG X570S TORPEDO MAX // Processor: AMD Ryzen 9 5950X @4.9GHz // GFX: AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT // RAM: 32GB (4x 8GB) Corsair DDR4 (@ 3000MHz) // Storage: 1x 3TB HDD, 6x 1TB SSD, 2x 120GB SSD, 1x 275GB M2 SSD

Making lemonade from lemons since 2015.

Re: External media read-only issues

How do you mount them, what filesystem is on these drives?
Does "after a while" mean hours, days, weeks? Is there anything relevant you did just before it happened, like a kernel update?

Re: External media read-only issues

are you sure it is being mounted as read only? excuse me, might sound dumb, but maybe after the fresh install you were still logged into the root account and had write access to the mounted folder. then after you created your user acc and logged into that, you will not automatically have write access to mounted devices, unless you explicitly give them to you.
