Freezes after changing an i5 cpu for i7

Hello,
I've changed my Intel Core i5 680 cpu @ 3,60 GHz which worked pretty well by an Intel Core i7 880 @ 3,06 GHz expecting more performance.
Since I've changed the cpu I'm experiencing some applications freezes for some seconds until they respond again, but I have no error in the terminal output. This affects to other applications too. For example if I'm watching a video while I'm surfing the internet with firefox 27 and it freezes, the video stop playing, and I can't launch any other application, applications menu does not drop... almost all applications freezes for some seconds until it all respond again. When these freezes happens I see the cpu monitor raises up to 50% more or less as a plateau during the freeze.

I've already reinstalled the kernel with 'pacman -S linux' but haven't solved the problem.

The last time I've had to reboot pushing the power button manually because I began to get "bus error" in every application I tried to start from terminal.

I want to know if it is a cpu malfunction because I've just purchased it used.

Is it a cpu malfunction or is it that I have to reinstall Archlinux?

Re: Freezes after changing an i5 cpu for i7

I would start by checking the output of dmesg for any hints about problems. Also check the cpu temperature and bios settings regarding the cpu. Check for any bios updates and google for any possible problems about that combination of board and cpu.

Re: Freezes after changing an i5 cpu for i7

Thank you R00KIE. I've come back to i5 so I can't check dmesg output, I didn't think it before. About the cpu temperature when the freezes occurs the cpu was at 40ºC, BIOS settings are all set to auto and the BIOS it's at its last version from manufacturer. Cpu is supported by this bios version so there shouldn't be any problems related to use an i7 and so I haven't found any information in google.

It's a cpu used that I bought in ebay, so I'm now in conversations with the seller in order to turn it back. He is a little reluctant but I'm covered by 14 days to turn it back if I want, I hope he see reason soon. He says that these problems are because of using an i5 heatshink, that I'm overburning it, and I say it isn't so because the cpu was able to be converting a video for 20 minutes at 78ºC and nothing hanged, so it proves that if the problem were in the heatshink in that moment all system would hanged, but it didn't, even temperature would rised to it's limits before freezing or hanging, nevertheless it was stable converting the video and with temperatures in the limits. The freezes just take some seconds long when occurs and at 40 ºC... it's not a heatsink issue!

I've come back to the i7 again. I've experienced the same random frozens but now I've been able to do a dmesg after the first one. This is the last part of the dmesg output:

It's strange for me to have HDD errors just with the i7 processor, with the i5 I have no problems.
I don't know if this is the part in which the cpu makes the HDD fail (if it is so):

Re: Freezes after changing an i5 cpu for i7

May the mainboard need a firmware upgrade? Compare the versions and inspect the "what is new" list.

I suppose you mean the BIOS. The BIOS is at its latest version (my motherboard is an ASUS P7H57D-V EVO and the BIOS version is 1903). There is not even a newer beta version, that is latest.

This is the comparison between both cpus characteristics: http://ark.intel.com/es-es/compare/48504,48500
My HDD is a Seagate Barracuda 7200 rpm 2 TB SATA 6 Gb/s

If you need a complete dmesg output you just have to say it.

3.13.5 is out already perhaps 3.13.4 is buggy I have the same problem "platform microcode: Direct firmware load failed with error -2"

Re: Freezes after changing an i5 cpu for i7

Sorry, I had repeated same thing already been told..

Then, except a damaged hardware, I think you have the very weak probability of the errors caused by cpu contacts not clean enough. I am not so much experienced, just a guess.

Re: Freezes after changing an i5 cpu for i7

Might be a bad psu or your board can't cope with the load of the i7, just wild guesses here as that seems strange.

The message about about the platform microcode is most probably harmless.

Re: Freezes after changing an i5 cpu for i7

Buff... last time I haven't even able to login at X (I/O error (...) on sector XXXXXXX). I've checked the HDD with GParted USB Live version but no errors were encountered.

Thank you for your suggestion rusty725. I've updated to the kernel 3.13.5 from testing archlinux repo but HDD errors persists.

R00KIE wrote:

Thank you for your suggestions R00KIE. The motherboard supports this i7 version (I've checked it before buying the i7), including the motherboard supports overclocking it, and my power supply unit is a bequiet E7-700W so it's able to supply enough power.

This must be a kernel bug, or a kernel configuration problem, or an Arch Linux bug, because I'm writting this from Windows 7, I'm running various tests and doing some things and I'M HAVING NO ERRORS AT ALL. This is a Linux related issue FOR SURE.

What can I try?

Re: Freezes after changing an i5 cpu for i7

Try to test the memory with memtest, although if windows works it might not be the source of the problem, still it doesn't hurt to test it.

Try using the lts kernel and try live cd/dvd/usb with older kernel releases, if it is a recent kernel regression you may be able to spot it that way.

Your disk may have problems, check what smartctl has to say about the disk health (your windows partitions are probably not shared with linux ones so you might not see the problem on windows).

No more ideas here.

Re: Freezes after changing an i5 cpu for i7

Package intel-ucode is installed?
If it's installed, uninstall it, reboot and check if the issue persists.
If it isn't installed, install it, reboot and check if the issue persists.

I didn't have it installed, I didn't knew it even to exist. And now the microcode errors have become these messages, much more reliable:

It looks pretty well. Unfortunately these errors are random errors, I have no way to reproduce them, I just can use the pc normally and wait them to happen, so I don't know when will I be able to say that are corrected.

Your disk may have problems, check what smartctl has to say about the disk health

I do not see any error in the smartctl outputs and my HDD it's in the smartctl's database, what is a good news.

Try using the lts kernel and try live cd/dvd/usb with older kernel releases, if it is a recent kernel regression you may be able to spot it that way.

It's other test I had planned to do when I had more time, but by the moment I'll be testing the korn36's solution (having installed intel-ucode package) which seems to be working pretty well... by the moment. smile

Could it be related to this? https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=43160
Could the i7 be reproducing these problems while i5 isn't?

Re: Freezes after changing an i5 cpu for i7

In your BIOS, is the HDD set to the AHCI mode or IDE mode?

Re: Freezes after changing an i5 cpu for i7

As for the bugzilla report, try disabling NCQ: echo 1 > /sys/block/sda/device/queue_depth
(The change will be reverted on reboot, so if you run it and the system is stable after that, make the command run on boot.)
Also disable the "Backup BIOS to HDD" thing in the BIOS/

Re: Freezes after changing an i5 cpu for i7

HDD is set to AHCI. If I set it to IDE Archlinux isn't able to find the root partition since I have them configured by UUID in fstab and their names changes if you choose IDE Mode instead AHCI Mode. And since AHCI is better in performance than IDE, I would prefer AHCI anyway.  I know it would be as simple as changing the partition names to the IDE format.

Disabling NCQ with: echo 1 > /sys/block/sda/device/queue_depth seems to solve the HDD problems. Nevertheless HDD preformance has decreased significantly, and I'm sorry but I wouldn't settle for a 3 Gb/s performance after having paid for a 6 Gb/s HDD. It would be like buying a good car that can run at 120 km/h but it has the problem that driving at 100 km/h vibrates, and the mechanic says: "If driving at 100 km/h the car vibrates, drive at 80 km/h then. SOLVED". I'm sorry but I think that it would work as a patch (in order to get to the garage) but not as a final solution.

I don't mind changing configurations in order to get the system works well, but changing configurations in order to limit my pc performance and characteristics... I wouldn't be settle for such situation.

I've spent much more time trying to solve this issue than what I expected and should. And changing to windows, that is the SO which works well with this hardware, is not an option for me. So, I surrender. I'm going to try to get the seller refund me the cpu, but if he doesn't I won't try to make it work until the summer. Given that I need the pc working well right now I'm coming back to the i5, and finished issue.

THANK YOU korn36, R00KIE, serseri and rusty725 for your help, but I haven't got more time to fight against this issue. See you!
