Hi, I installed Arch yesterday for the first time and like many have stumbled a bit when it comes to sorting out video card drivers. My card is an ATI Radeon HD 4870. I have been reading some conflicting opinions as to whether the OSS or proprietary drivers are best so I just wanted to confirm here. Should I go with installing the open source versions and is the command to do so "sudo pacman -S xf86-video-ati lib32-ati-dri"? Many thanks!

What are you going to use the card for?
For most usage OSS drivers are fine, but for gaming the proprietary drivers are better.
Proprietary drivers used to glitch last time I was using them, so I switched to OSS ones. The performance on the OSS drivers is good enough for doing most stuff, but proprietary drivers are way better for gaming.

I don't really game much at all (apart from the odd round of starcraft 2). I think I read that ATI don't support my card any longer so if that's true it might decide for me.

Yes, ATI doesn't support your card any more, and you need to downgrade to an obsolete version of Xorg to be able to use the proprietary drivers.
Go with the OSS ones, and if Starcraft 2 lags, consider switching to proprietary ones.

Ok, thanks. Just to confirm then to install the OSS ones all I need to do is "sudo pacman -S xf86-video-ati lib32-ati-dri"?
