I did some googling but no joy. Is there a command or utility to change the opacity of the cursor. Thanks in advance for your help

I don't know about changing the opacity of the mouse cursor. But if your desire is to have the mouse cursor be less in the way when not in use, I would recommend using 'unclutter'. When still for more than your set interval it hides the cursor completely, and should you move the mouse again or need to scroll, the position is still considered to be in the last place.
If you are really just looking to make the mouse cursor opaque... then I can't help. Sorry.

I've figured out rather brutal approach... But hear me out:
1) Make your own set of cursor themes, each with different opacity level in, lets say, gimp + Xcursorgen
2) Bind some key with cli utility for changing cursor theme, like kapplymousetheme or gsettings... Dunno what you can use for non-DE WM...

lxappearance works in DE less environments (for setting cursor theme, not opacity).
