Font Questions

Hello, I have a couple questions about fonts concerning the use of infinality (I have the normal and lib32 versions of ultimate installed) with kde4. I am new to arch and I do always try to do my own research whenever any problems come up, but all the information I have found don't really answer my questions. That, and compared to all my other past issues, font configuration is surprisingly an intimidating field O.O

First off, does infinality work with kde4? Or, is infinality really necessary with kde4? This is not really an issue, more of a curiosity. I saw something on this that said to match the font settings (in system settings) to the the general settings in the infinality.conf but nothing that addressed compatibility.

Secondly, how can I change the default Japanese font on KDE4?

Thanks, hopefully I didn't overlook any past posts/articles that answer these questions, if I have I apologize in advance.

EDIT: Okay, I found out that I had actually successfully changed my Japanese fonts before (I thought it didn't work, or I did something wrong). The problem was that chromium wasn't applying these changes. I'm looking into this now, and any help on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT2: Through an extension I can change the font for specifically Japanese tagged sites but for general sites that I want to view in Japanese without the html tag it seems to revert back to the default (KDE's default maybe) chicken scratch..

Re: Font Questions

The question is: Do QT & Chromium use freetype and fontconfig properly?

Chromium doesn't use fontconfig - I recommend to use firefox instead.

QT seems to have very weird, half-assed support for freetype & fontconfig, with bug reports strangely closed without being fixed (here's one little example). This has been going on for many years. Another conspiracy or power-struggle, I reckon sad

Re: Font Questions

@brebs: thanks for the help, that makes a whole lot of sense. But the thing is, I absolutely need the latest flash version (some fixes for multiple screens that I need) and that's the reason why I'm forced to use chromium hmm Is there any kind of patch/workaround to update firefoxes flash to the latest version? Also, if QT doesn't fully support fontconfig/freetype, which suite/window manager would you recommend?

Re: Font Questions

What's "latest"? Specify the version number.

Current flash is 11.2.202.336 - does Chromium have a later version?

XFCE works OK, I've used it for many years. If I switched, it would probably be to LXDE.

I think he's talking about chromium-pepper-flash, which indeed works much better with multiple screens. And no, there's no possible way to use it with firefox.

For me, infinality-bundle and infinality-bundle-fonts both changed font rendering in chromium, so it seems odd that it wasn't using fontconfig settings. Haven't tried switching japanese font though.

Yeah, I was referring to chromium-pepper-flash, it's too bad that firefox can't be updated.. I do prefer firefox over chrome, if only flash didn't discriminate -.-

I'm not sure if my infinality presets were applied to chromium (Honestly, I'm not even sure if it applied to my system, it says it has though).. Are you using the standard infinality packages or the ultimate ones?

I think I'll give LXDE a try, I have nothing tying me down to KDE so might as well experiment. Thanks for the suggestion.

I'm using infinality-bundle from bohoomil's repo, so I guess that would be ultimate. Honestly I didn't even know there was 'standard' and 'ultimate' packages..
