I finally updated to the new x server 1.15 now that the catalyst drivers seem to be okay with it. Most things work fine, except X crashes when I try and run videos from the command line using mplayer or cvlc.
I'd be very happy if someone could provide me pointers on how to track this down.

fglrx is closed source, no point in debugging it.

for mplayer just add line
vo=gl
or
