[kernel] depmod error when installing kernel 3.13.4

today I installed linux-3.13.4-1, and I get an error message :

depmod: ERROR: Module 'hci_vhci' has devname (vhci) but lacks major and minor information. Ignoring.

is it normal ?

the same message occurs for the package virtualbox-host-modules-4.3.6-5

Same error here. The bug report doesn’t say if it’s a problem or not.

Re: [kernel] depmod error when installing kernel 3.13.4

It's only a problem if you need need vhci (sharing USB devices over a network).

Well I suppose I don’t, as my system rebooted correctly wink. Thanks.

Re: [kernel] depmod error when installing kernel 3.13.4

From the kernel help:

CONFIG_BT_HCIVHCI:

Bluetooth Virtual HCI device driver.
This driver is required if you want to use HCI Emulation software.

Say Y here to compile support for virtual HCI devices into the
kernel or say M to compile it as module (hci_vhci).

Nobody really needs that. And even if someone does, it will still work. The only use of the ignored 'devname' is to create /dev/vhci on boot, so that the driver will be loaded automatically when someone tries to use it. I could not think of a less important issue with the kernel.

Re: [kernel] depmod error when installing kernel 3.13.4

crap, I was thinking of the usb-vhci module, not the hci_vhci. Sorry for the misinformation.

Well, here https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/38686 someone says that bumblebee and optirun no longer work for him now, which would be a major issue I guess.

Spamming this thread with unrelated problems will have the same result as spamming the bug report with unrelated problems: None.

Re: [kernel] depmod error when installing kernel 3.13.4

My posting descibed exactly the error the OP mentioned, and expanded on possible consequences of that error, so I don't know what you mean by hijacking.
Edit: to make clear why it was important to mention the information written in that link again, that was because a dev claimed that the module causing the error was totally unimportant. But that is apparently different from what the person in said bug report wrote.

Re: [kernel] depmod error when installing kernel 3.13.4

bumblebee and optirun have absolutely nothing to do with this. Completely OT.
