[Solved] Nexus 5 connectivity

Right, I'm trying to connect my Nexus 5 to my laptop for USB tethering and media transfer. Now the procedure is not hard, I used to connect my xperia x10 and and my s3 just fine. I have searched and found many threads on here, on Ubuntu's forum, and xda but my problem seems to be at a lower level. The suggestions is always to install a bunch of packages (which I've done).

Here is what I've installed :qtadb, libmtp, gmtp, android-sdk-platform-tools, android-udev. I'm running Arch 64 bit (KDE) and the problem is on both my T410 and PC.

What is really worrying me is that it seems the phone is not detected in any form or shape. It just draws power from USB. Here is lsusb with the phone connected. (lsusb with the phone not connected is the same)

[root@T410 /]# lsusb

Nexus is running 4.4.2 stock firmware. The USB computer connection setting has been tried with PTP and MTP. I'm going nuts here and starting to think it is from my phone somehow (it connects just fine on Windows though). Different usb cables and ports have been tried. Help sad

Re: [Solved] Nexus 5 connectivity

Connect the USB device and then post the tail of the output of dmesg starting just before the point where you attached the phone

This? (plugged and unplugged several times and the output didn't change at all)

Re: [Solved] Nexus 5 connectivity

Well, that output has nothing to do with connecting the phone.  Each time you connect, I would expect to see data such as this output caused when I connect my HTC:

[57560.484423] usb 2-1: new high-speed USB device number 3 using ehci-pci
[57560.698265] usb-storage 2-1:1.0: USB Mass Storage device detected

[57561.706263] scsi 6:0:0:1: Direct-Access HTC Incredible 0100 PQ: 0 ANSI: 2
[57561.708411] scsi 6:0:0:2: Direct-Access HTC Incredible 0100 PQ: 0 ANSI: 2

[57561.790738] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk

Yours does not even try to connect.  There is no negotiation, no errors, nothing.

Either you have a bad cable, or the phone is not in a mode where it behaves like a USB client.  Does that phone work with other computers?

Re: [Solved] Nexus 5 connectivity

Well I tried every cable I have, in every port, on three arch machines and none worked. I don't have any other linux distro to try out but on Windows it worked.

Anyway, I gave up and conceded to the fact that something is wrong with the phone. I reset my phone and voila it works.

I'm still baffled as to why this happened. Stock firmware, not rooted, and choosing to work on Windows but not linux.

Anyway, as far as Arch is concerned, this is "Solved."

I am able to connect to my Nexus 5 using gMTP on GNOME 3.10.

I have found mtp problematic everywhere. Actually it turns out we don't need any special software/drivers to sync Android phones at all. Just use Airdroid. It's platform independent, does a lot more than just music/video/image/file transfer, and has a beautiful UI.

I had considered that iTunes iOS syncing was generally better, or at least easier, than the hacky Android solutions. Airdroid blows iTunes out of the park both in functionality and ease of use.

Are you suggesting that my Nexus 5 is not using Android? Modern Android phones use MTP which is a Microsoft protocol so unfortunately we do need extra software on Linux and Mac OS.

I am now getting more and more errors using gMTP. I tried installing gvfs-mtp and now I can copy files to my Nexus 5 in Nautilus!

Jeepers, have I confused you that much! sad

Modern Android phones use MTP which is a Microsoft protocol so unfortunately we do need extra software on Linux and Mac OS.

If you bother to punch "Airdroid" into your browser search you will see that it connects to your Android phone over your wifi LAN (or remotely via the internet if you want!). Allows drag and drop of all the videos, photos, music, content on your phone to or from your PC via a web browser. Also provides remote control of sms, calls, apps if you want as well. So you don't need any special pc side software at all, other than a modern web browser, and it works MUCH more smoothly and better than crappy MTP.
