I expect most people don't see the problem because they don't use the release repository. You should probably be using current and extra.
Having said that, if you have a good reason to use release, perhaps you need to try a different mirror or something. What command are you getting the error on? maybe you need to refresh -- pacman -Sy?

I didn't think anyone used release, tbh - it's not mentioned in the default pacman.conf. The reason you get that message is because there is no file called release.db.tar.gz - at least, there isn't on the mirror I use, or on ftp.archlinux.org.
The content of release looks the same as current (obviously, I haven't checked every file), so why not use that?

Yeah, I don't think 'release' is a real gensync'd repo...

No, that's an error on my part. Fixed now.

It's simple: you're not supposed to use "release".
Sure, you could do it, but what's the point? If you want to run some essential service that's not to be touched during normal upgrades, just make a simple IgnorePkg addition for it in /etc/pacman.conf.
"release" is no more than a random snapshot that's receiving no additions or updates whatsoever. If you intend to update from release to release, just don't. It's a way greater hassle than simply using "current" and having a look at the website from time to time.
