No more Mouse/Touchpad after upgrade

Dear all,

after the last update (two, three days ago), I have no more mouse present in my gnome-shell. There is even no pointer at all. Yesterday I had it once with an external USB-Mouse, did some more updates and lost it again.

The recent PS/2-keyboard separation issue seems to be unrelated:

$ dmesg -t | grep '^i8042'
i8042: PNP: PS/2 Controller [PNP0303:KBD,PNP0f13:MOU] at 0x60,0x64 irq 1,12

The touchpad seems to be recognized:

[    6.676817] psmouse serio2: alps: Unknown ALPS touchpad: E7=10 00 64, EC=10 00 64
[    8.212544] psmouse serio2: trackpoint: IBM TrackPoint firmware: 0x0e, buttons: 3/3
[    8.451917] input: TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint as /devices/platform/i8042/serio1/serio2/input/input13

as is the USB-Mouse:

[ 1471.783336] usb 4-2: new low-speed USB device number 3 using uhci_hcd
[ 1471.982692] input: Microsoft Microsoft(R) Compact Optical Mouse as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.0/usb4/4-2/4-2:1.0/input/input16

I don't know, where to dig :-(. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Guntram

What did you update? (Check your pacman log.)

Re: No more Mouse/Touchpad after upgrade

The only possible candidates imho are the kernel update and WebKitGTK.

Re: No more Mouse/Touchpad after upgrade

I tried to downgrade some packages one after another. Starting with webkitgtk and now libftdi.

Strange things happened: The mouse pointer worked after each first reboot after the downgrades! But when rebooting a second time (without having touched pacman), the mouse is gone again!

So what happens on first reboot after some pacman operation, what doesn't happen on second reboot or vice-versa?

sad

Re: No more Mouse/Touchpad after upgrade

I seem to be experiencing a very similar problem since upgrading the kernel to 3.13. Seemingly every second boot (I haven't checked whether this directly follows a pacman upgrade/downgrade) I lose the touchpad and trackpoint on my ThinkPad. When the devices fail xinput sometimes lists them as being present, other times they are absent. When they are listed, the output is as follows.

xinput list

⎡ Virtual core pointer id=2 [master pointer (3)]
⎜ ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4 [slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad id=11 [slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint id=13 [slave pointer (2)]
⎣ Virtual core keyboard id=3 [master keyboard (2)]
↳ Virtual core XTEST keyboard id=5 [slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Power Button id=6 [slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Sleep Button id=8 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ ThinkPad Extra Buttons id=10 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ AT Translated Set 2 keyboard id=9 [slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Video Bus id=7 [slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ UVC Camera (17ef:4807) id=12 [slave keyboard (3)]

The touchpad/trackpad failure is often accompanied by a system hang shortly after boot (of the order of a minute). The devices do not respond when I attempt to enable them using xinput. If I try to reboot the system it complains that it cannot unmount all devices and hangs indefinitely. Following a hard shutdown and reboot both the trackpad/touchpad once again work as expected. Searching for errors using journalctl I find the following, which seem to be related to the synaptics touchpad...

journalctl

Re: No more Mouse/Touchpad after upgrade

same problem here on my ThinkPad! The problem suddenly occured after an approximate uptime of 12h (last update was yesterday). The touchpad was absolutely unresponsive but still recognized by the kernel/Xorg. After several reboots still unresponsive. I booted into an ubuntu live cd and the touchpad still didn't work. a full shutdown and reboot fixed the issue. but i still notice that the trackpad hangs after some idle time and that i have to tap the surface a bit harder to activate it again.

Re: No more Mouse/Touchpad after upgrade

Ok. I think I've narrowed it down to the kernel itself (what a surprise ;-) ).
When updating to linux-3.13, the next reboot gives some ugly error messages on shutdown (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1376079) and stops at

kvm: exiting hardware virtualization

I have to hard power off and after the (second) reboot, the mouse is gone.
Installation of the new kernel tells some errors on which I didn't find useful information (except, that they are believed to be harmless):

And for hardware: Lenovo T400 here.

Re: No more Mouse/Touchpad after upgrade

I concur with guntram, it seems to be an issue caused by the 3.13 kernel. Downgrading to 3.12.9-2 fixes the problem for me.

From a scan of the forums it looks like others are experiencing (possibly related) freezing issues with the latest kernel:

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=177561

According to that thread the issue is fixed with kernel 3.14-rc3. I'll stick with 3.12.9-2 for now and wait for an update.

Re: No more Mouse/Touchpad after upgrade

The latest update (3.13.5-1) seems to have solved the problem. Can you guys confirm this?

Re: No more Mouse/Touchpad after upgrade

Hmm, very strange, 3.13-5.1 now seems to work for me too. I reinstalled the kernel (from my cache) and have successfully rebooted three times without experiencing any mouse related issues. I certainly tried both 3.13 kernels last week (guntram, from your posts above it looks like you did too) and experienced the mouse/trackpad issue with both of them. The only other thing I can think of is that I needed to reinstall the tp_smapi package after the 3.13-5.1 kernel landed.

Anyway, I'll keep an eye on this to see if it resurfaces. Thanks for the update.

Re: No more Mouse/Touchpad after upgrade

Why is it strange to you? This is 3.13-5.1 - the other one was 3.13.4-1. The problem seems "simpyl" to have been fixed in this new kernel version?

Re: No more Mouse/Touchpad after upgrade

Strange. I am experiencing exactly the same problem even after upgrading to 3.13.5-1. Which architecture are you using? i686 or x86_64?

Re: No more Mouse/Touchpad after upgrade

I'm using x86_64 on a ThinkPad x301. I experienced the same problem with 3.13.5-1 when I installed it as part of a standard pacman update (along with other packages) but I haven't (yet) seen problems having reinstalled the new kernel from my cache (after I downgraded to 3.12.9-2, which fixed the problem). The only difference with the reinstall was that the kernel was upgraded alone, which was followed by a reinstall of tp_smapi (this had an upgrade around the time the first 3.13 kernel dropped but wasn't reinstalled on my first upgrade to 3.13.5-1).

As I mentioned previously, I was consistently experiencing the mouse/trackpad issue on every second boot with both the 3.13.4-1 and 3.13.5-1 kernels. As of now (around 5 reboots) I haven't experienced any issues after reinstalling 3.13.5-1. I'll update if anything changes.

Re: No more Mouse/Touchpad after upgrade

Same problem here. 3.13.5-1 gives me a NULL pointer deref in mousedev. Pointer does not work for the first 30s (or so) after gdm starts up but then returns and works as usual.

I reported a Kernel bug, let's see what happens.

Re: No more Mouse/Touchpad after upgrade

It looks like I spoke too soon, the problem resurfaced on my most recent boot (complete with the NULL pointer deref in mousedev). Perhaps the "every second boot" issue that I was experiencing was mere coincidence. Unlike gegenschall my pointer doesn't ever resume working, even though the touchpad/trackpad are both listed under xinput.

I'm back to 3.12.9-2 for the time being.

I am using a i686 archlinux and unfortunately my pointer never shows up after booting with linux-3.13.5-1.

Re: No more Mouse/Touchpad after upgrade

Find some more information today.

If the gdm auto-login is enable, the touchpad/trackpoint will not work after booting from linux-3.15.5-1. Furthermore, my system will be stuck at reboot, showing something like exiting kvm...

If I disable the auto-login function of gdm, everything will work out of box.

Re: No more Mouse/Touchpad after upgrade

Seems like similar issues I had after upgrade.

This (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 4#p1388794) did trick for me.

Great! Thanks for this information. Adding psmouse into my mkinitcpico.conf did solve my problem!

Re: No more Mouse/Touchpad after upgrade

Hey folks,

got the same problem on my ThinkPad T61. But for me adding psmouse (or i8042 or anything else) into the modules array in mkinitpio.conf didn't work. I'm glad that I got my mouse cursor back for now. :-/ Any ideas to solve the problem?

Another question: How did you get the 3.15 kernel?

You should start by looking at dmesg / journal output. Any errors there? It is always a good habit to go through it after kernel update or from time to time and get rid of all errors, warnings etc.

BastardLawyerFromHell wrote:

If you refer to linux-3.15.5-1 above, it's a typo I believe, since no such kernel exists yet.

Re: No more Mouse/Touchpad after upgrade

I'm late to the thread but adding psmouse to MODULES fixed the issue on my Thinkpad T430s. Thanks a bunch!

Quick sanity check: You did remember to recreate the ramdisk (mkinitcpio -P) after editing mkinitcpio.conf, right?
